Performance Chips will Increase Gas Mileage

With today's inflated gasoline prices we all find ourselves searching for ways to cut corners when it comes to how many of our dollars go to the gas pumps. I have actually encountered people that do not want to invest in aftermarket accessories now that gas prices are high. This honestly baffles me for a lack of a better term. There are many great aftermarket accessories that will help increase your MPG.

One performance accessory that you can justify purchasing due to the simple fact it will pay for itself with the money you will save in gas is a performance chip or power programmer. A chip or programmer will enhance your truck's performance. All vehicles come with a special computer chip that controls your engine's output, particularly in the area of fuel delivery. A performance chip will help your vehicle realize a much more efficient delivery of fuel to your engine at specified times in the course of driving. This will result in noticeable increases in horsepower as well as torque.

Dog

Top name brands in the aftermarket performance chip arena include Edge Products, Superchips Inc, Diablo Sport and Bully Dog. What I would recommend is finding an online store such as Thoroughbreddiesel.com that specializes in performance products. Ask them any question you may have. Each programmer option will serve different results based on your vehicle. Do your homework and you will be unable to deny the fact that a performance chip or programmer is a great investment for your vehicle.

Male Cat Behavior Problems - How to Stop Your Tom Cat's Bad Behavior

Owners of male cats face extra challenges as their tomcats often have additional behavior problems compared to female cats. The first of these is that they are more active and need to find the companionship of female cats. As a side-effect of this need, male cats frequently try to leave home. It is not quite running away, as they are quite willing to come home after doing the deed. The problem is that they face a lot of danger outside the house. They will get into fights with other male cats. They may also get run down by traffic. These additional worries of owning tomcats can certainly give their owners premature grey hair.

For these reasons, vets and many animal rights groups strongly recommend that owners neuter their tomcats. Neutered male cats lose that urge to wander, making it easier to keep them close to home. They will stop chasing after the female cats in heat, and stop aggressively fighting with rival tomcats. No more wandering and less fighting - all these mean they are less likely to get badly hurt outside the home. One more side benefit is that they will not produce stray kittens from their unauthorized rendezvous with female cats.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

Many vets prefer to err on the side of caution and will not neuter male cats until they are one year old. Others are willing to do it as early as four months old, as some newer studies indicate that younger neutered tomcats do not show adverse reactions. The earlier you get your tomcat neutered, the better. They are less likely to develop the habits of fighting, wandering and chasing after female cats. Despite this, neutering them late is better than not neutering them at all. As long as the habit is no longer being driven by natural instinct, it can be broken and replaced with something else.

Still, neutered or not, tomcats do tend to be more aggressive. While you can never get rid of this aggression completely, you can reduce it over time. One simple way is to put a collar with a bell on your male cat. What does this do? Often, your male cat likes to attack other animals. It will stalk them, and ambush them. It is obvious that the attacker often has the initiative in a fight. If your tomcat can surprise the other cat and pounce first, it is more likely to win the fight. While winning is generally a good thing, in this case it only encourages your cat to get into more fights. Once you bell your tomcat, it will have more difficulty stalking and successfully attacking other cats and animals. Slowly, it will lose the urge to get into fights.

Another problem more common to male cats is spraying. Spraying is different from urination. For one thing, it usually affects vertical surfaces like walls. Your cat does it to mark its territory. Common litter training techniques will not help. Neither will punishment. One thing you can do is to learn where your tomcat's favorite spraying locations are, and clean it with some form of enzymatic solution. Normal cleaners will not work - they do not remove the underlying odors of male cat urine. Your vet or local pet shop will probably have something suitable for you. After cleaning, you can spray one of those "pet behave sprays" to keep kitty away.

How to Tell Your Cat Loves You

Cats have a reputation for being disloyal, at least compared with dogs. However that can be an unfair reputation in most cases. Your cat will often show its affection for you, and it's important to know just how it does so you can respond in kind. This will help you to build an even stronger bond with your pet.

Cats purr when they are happy and content. It is usually a sign that a cat is showing affection towards you or someone else, although very occasionally it can be used to signal discontent, stress and even sickness. However given the circumstance it should be possible to differentiate between these two very different emotions. As always, if you aren't sure about your cats health you should visit a vet.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

A cat wanting to show affection will also be willing to rub against you, often while purring. If a cat trusts you, then it will be comfortable in your arms and will usually allow you to pick it up. Another common signal of trust is rolling over to expose its belly, which is a cats weak point.

If your cat shows some or all of these signs of affection then it is likely to be content and happy. A consequence of happiness is the loyalty of the cat will increase. Look out for other signs of affection such as licking or rubbing its nose against you, or even bringing what the cat considers presents to you. Dead mice might not be appetizing to you, but it does show your cats love towards you.

It's important not to try and force your cat into doing any of the above. If you treat your cat well, feed it properly and allow it the freedom it needs then over time your relationship will build naturally.

Can Cats Find Their Way Home?

Cat owners often find it necessary to allow their pets to explore the outdoors, rather than keeping them contained in the home. The cat is often let out in the morning before the owner goes to work and is waiting at the door step when the owner arrives home. The humans often wonder how cats can find their way home when there is so much to see in the world.

Though it seems it would be easy for the feline to get distracted by all the outdoor creatures and locations to investigate, the cat has its priorities in line. Wild cats in early times were forced to travel great distances for a meal but needed to find their way back home in order to avoid becoming prey. In addition, the animal could plot new routes from one point to the other once it developed a familiarity of the terrain.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

The cat has the ability to make mental maps, observe the terrain, and use its senses of smell and hearing. Some even believe that these animals make use of the position of the sun and magnetic fields in order to find their way. This has been studied but has yet to be proven and the ability for a cat to find its way home from hundreds of miles away is very unlikely.

Inside cats that are accidentally let out of the home will frequently follow the same path and end up in the same spot each time. If they escape on a regular basis, they may become braver and venture further into the outdoors. In most cases, they will be scared and will not want anyone to pick them up or touch them.

If the cat goes missing, check the area within and surrounding the home and then walk through the neighborhood. The cat may be hiding in a bush or shrub in the neighbor's yard and if it is scared, it may emit a high howling sound. Look under parked cars and if the cat is still not found, wait overnight to see if it comes home on its own. If the cat is still missing, place posters on telephone poles throughout the neighborhood.

Cat owners often wonder how their cats can find their way home if the animals have never been outdoors before. The cat makes use of its senses and instincts in order to make a path and then retrace its steps. Before long, the kitty will be safely snuggled in the lap of its owner after having a nice meal of cat food.

Correct Spacing When Laying Down Tile

Choosing the spacing between your tiles is an important part of tiling. You will want to have the correct size tile spacers before you start your project. Using tile spacers will help you stay straight with any pattern or design when you lay your tile.

Does size spacing matter?

SPAYING

The size of spacing between your tiles does matter. Choosing spacers for your tile spacing will help with the style and design. Using spacers also will help in getting your tile project correctly done. You will want to work out the tile spacing, before you start cutting or laying your tile. This is important to ensure that the tiles at the edge of the room or walls are not small pieces or fillers that will change the look of your design. If you choose not to use spacers and guess at the amount of space in-between each tile, this could throw off the whole room and your grout lines will not be even. You want to keep your tile in a grid; this will allow you to construct a symmetrical finish to your project.

The principle of using spacers is for your tile to be lined up straight. When choosing spacers the size of space will determine consistent width of your finished grout line. When you are looking for the different sizes of spacers the traditional sizes are 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1/8", 1/16". The most common spacers used tend to be ¼ or 3/8 inch. There is no rule to why these sizes are the most common used, however they tend to give most tile a nice proportional look after the grout is finished.

The size of the tile and the look you are going for will determine the size of tile spacers you will pick. There actually is not a specific rule to what size spacer you will be using. If you were to have a 10x10 tile you want to use the spacer that would fit best in your project for less cutting and also that will put your tile wall to wall or end to end.

Choosing the best spacer for your tile can be very easy if you know a few tips, for instance if you are tiling on an uneven floor that you are not going to fix before tiling you want to choose the smallest spacer for a small grout line this will help keep the maintenance up, your grout will stay put and you will not have to re grout as often.

Spacers come in different types and styles. The original spacer is a cross-like plastic tee you that you can find in any hardware store. You can also find round top spacer that has a tee on the bottom and a line or knob on the top for easy removal. All spacers are made of a washable and reusable material such as plastic. If you keep your spacers washed up they will last a very long time for your next tiling project.

When you are tiling ceramic tile, porcelain tile, travertine, marble, or Saltillo tile you want find the grout that best matches your tile. Grout comes in many different colors and brands. If you are looking for warmth on a bathroom floor and you are laying down a light porcelain tile you can choose a darker color grout. If you are using porcelain tile in a larger room you can pick a lighter color grout than what the tile color is and this will allow your room to have a large open look.

The purpose of tile grout is to close the space between the tiles so they bond tightly together. This also keeps water and other substances out of the cracks of the tile.

When you choose your spacer size you can use new modern styles you can choose a very large tile such as an 18x18 tile and use small grout line this will give your floor and house a contemporary look. If you are using small 4x4 tiles you can pick a larger grout line such as a 3/4 grout line these ideas are more edgy styles that you would not be used to seeing in past tiling.

When you make your final choice of tile spacer size, you should be aware that your tile and grout will need maintenance. You should wash and reseal your tile and grout once a year. You can use the brush on or spray sealer, allow time to dry before walking or laying items on your tile.

The Best Ways to Stay Regular

One of the most common concerns my patients have is how to stay regular. Although it rarely indicates a major health concern, constipation can cause discomfort, bloating and lack of energy. When you feel uncomfortable, it's not easy to focus on work, family and other important activities. Many people think harsh laxatives are the only answer to the problem, but that is not the case. Fortunately, there are natural treatments and easy ways to stay regular that don't require prescription drugs or cause annoying side effects.

Curing Constipation

SPAYING

If you have gone longer than two to three days without a bowel movement, there is a good chance you are suffering from constipation. Your first thought may be to pick up a laxative at the drug store, but these medicines can cause cramps, diarrhea or dehydration. To cure constipation naturally, you can turn to herbs and other natural remedies that have been used for centuries to gently restore balance to the body.

To tackle clogged bowels, psyllium husk is a highly effective option. Derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant, this grainy substance is sold in natural food stores. Follow the directions on the package or simply stir a spoonful into a glass of juice and drink up.

Psyllium is often mixed with sweeteners and other artificial ingredients to make products like Metamucil and Fiber Con. Natural psyllium has no additives and is less expensive. You can drink psyllium up to three times per day to fight constipation and once a day to maintain regularity.

Ayurvedic medicine, which is popular in India, encompasses some natural cures for constipation. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend senna, an herb that encourages easier bowel movements. Licorice root has similar properties to senna, and the two may be used together. Coriander leaves, often used in Indian cooking, are another trusted remedy that helps balance the digestive system.

Hot liquids may encourage bowel movements, so teas and tonics are a good choice. Dandelion tea has many health properties and is thought to relieve constipation. You should be able to purchase dandelion tea bags in health food stores. Honey is a centuries-old home remedy for a variety of ailments, including constipation. Mix a tablespoon with hot water and sip after meals.

Natural Prevention

Even people with healthy digestive systems occasionally fall prey to constipation. Stress, travel or a change in eating habits may be to blame. Taking preventative steps can keep your body functioning smoothly, even when life gets hectic.

You've probably heard about the importance of fiber, especially as it relates to preventing constipation. Fiber is the natural bulk in whole grains, vegetables and fruit that is indigestible to the body. Fiber attaches to the stool and helps it move easily and quickly through the digestive track.

The surest way to get adequate fiber in your daily diet is to load up at breakfast. Look for cereals with at least 5 grams per serving. Eat whole grain or sprouted grain breads, English muffins or pitas. Breads should have at least 3 grams of fiber per slice. Add a piece of fiber-rich fruit, like pears, apricots, strawberries, apples, dried prunes or dates, peaches or pineapple.

Other high fiber foods that anyone can fit into their diet are beans, which can go into salads, burritos, soups or grain dishes; nuts, which are filling and packed with antioxidants; and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Ground flax is another superfood you can trust to keep you regular. Sprinkle it on yogurt, cereal, salads, grain dishes or soups. If you are too busy to change your diet, natural supplements can help. Look for those containing flax and probiotics, the good bacteria that keep your digestive track healthy.

The more high fiber, unprocessed foods and supplements you consume, the happier your digestive system will be. In case constipation does take you by surprise, look to natural cures that have been used for many years to restore balance and comfort. Constipation is an unfortunate condition most people have to deal with, but remember that you can choose to manage it naturally.

Nanny Dogs

Do you know what a nanny dog is?  A "nanny dog" is the name given to pit bull terriers many, many years ago. Pit bulls were called nanny dogs because they were loyal, caring companions for children.

We have forgotten that their history is of a loving, caring family pet. They were treated as a part of the family. They were loved and respected and they gave love and respect in return. Todays' view of the pit bull is very different.

Dog

They are viewed as aggressive and dangerous animals and have been banned in many places. The pit bulls that are aggressive have been trained by their owners to be aggressive. Their nature is to love and to please the people that own them.

Our society blames the pit bulls. The blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the owners that train them to fight and to be aggressive. Dogs do not train themselves, people train them. Michael Vicks' recent trial and conviction for dog fighting is a step in the right direction. He was held accountable for his actions and the abuse of the dogs in his care. Every person that conducts themselves in such a manner should be held accountable in the same manner.

The pit bulls should not be punished for their actions because of owners training them in inappropriate behaviors. Responsible dog ownership brings about very much different behavior in dogs.

I hope that more people will remember pit bulls as nanny dogs in the future and give these dogs a chance to show their loving, caring nature. I will qualify what I am writing by saying that I am a pit bull owner and there is no more loving animal than my "nanny dog".

New Kitten Care -Ten Tips For Raising Your Kitten

You've picked your brand new kitten from a litter, and you're now ready to bring him home. You naturally want to give him the best possible start in life. Here are 10 tips to help him develop into a confident, affectionate adult cat who'll give you years of stress-free pleasure.

1. Make sure you're fully prepared for his arrival. Have his toys, food, litter box, scratching post and bed all ready for him. This will help him to settle in more quickly.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

2. Handle him - a lot. If kittens are handled a lot when they're young, they get used to it and learn to enjoy it. As a result, they're much more likely to turn into affectionate adults that love to be cuddled and stroked. Your new kitten should always be handled gently. If you have young kids, you'll need to supervise them with Kitty at first, to make sure they don't accidentally hurt him.

3. Get him used to receiving everyday care from you. This includes grooming him, washing his face, bathing him and cleaning his ears and eyes. If he gets comfortable with all this when he's a kitten, you'll have few problems with it when he's an adult.

4. Safely introduce him to the everyday things that will form part of his world as soon as possible. This may include other people, kids, other pets, travelling in your car, boarding at your sister's house when you go on holiday etc. etc. Doing this will turn him into a confident, happy, adaptable adult.

5. Play with him and talk to him every day. Bored kittens and cats often seek amusement in activities that you won't be too keen on, such as destroying the furniture. Playing with your kitten will build your relationship with him and help to prevent boredom.

6. Feed him a wide selection of foods that are suitable for kittens. This gets him used to a varied diet, and reduces the risk of him becoming a gourmet cuisine snob who'll only eat fresh wild salmon caught in the Scottish Highlands...

7. Gently and calmly set boundaries. Kittens are like kids - they'll push their luck to see how much they can get away with. Common naughty kitten behavior includes scratching, biting, jumping on the kitchen worktops, scratching the furniture and abseiling the curtains. If your kitten is being naughty, stop him, say "no" (don't shout) and move him away from the scene of his crime. It's much easier to train a new kitten to be good than an adult cat, so setting the boundaries whilst he's young can save you years of frustration in the future.

8. Don't give in to vocal blackmail. Some kittens try to get what they want by meowing non-stop. If you keep giving in to this, your kitten will turn into a very vocal adult cat who'll drive you nuts with his constant noisy demands.

9. Keep him safe. Nasty frights - for example falling down the toilet, being tormented by a kid or having a dog bark in his face - will have a negative impact on him. The more unpleasant experiences he has as a kitten, the more likely he is to become a nervous, mistrusting adult.

10. Accept that your new kitten is a baby with loads of energy. Whilst you can discourage him from acts of willful destruction, you'll need to accept that your house is unlikely to survive completely unscathed. But hey, he's worth it!

Ten Tips for Generating Traffic To Your Website

I know what you're thinking, oh great another article about generating traffic to my website. Well it is important for your website to have traffic. It makes absolutely no sense to have the most informative website in the world that no one knows about. This article lists ten low cost ways to generate traffic to your website. Enjoy.

1. Trade links with sites that have high ranking and content similar to yours.

YOUR DOG

While visitors are important, targeted visitors are really important. If your site is about dogs, it would be silly to trade links with a site that is for people who hate dogs. That would be counterproductive and just does not make sense. No, in order for your link trade to work, it should be with a site that covers the same topic that your website covers.

2. Publish a blog.

I really do not have time to go into all of the benefits of a blog in this article. Just understand that search engines love them and that other bloggers link to other bloggers frequently.

3. Publish your own newsletter.

Now I know what you're thinking, publish a newsletter? That sounds like a lot of work. Well yes it is, but if you write your newsletter about something you're interested in, it won't really seem like work at all. Can't write your way out of a paper bag? Don't worry about that, there are lots of places online where you can get free content on a regular basis. Just go to your favorite search engine and type in article directory and you will be amazed at the number of results that come up.

4. Offer some free content relevant to your subject matter.

People love freebies. Make sure that your content is of good quality and related to your subject material. It would also be nice if you required the visitor to leave an email address before receiving the freebie, that way you can build your list that much quicker.

5. Swap ads with other ezine publishers.

Find ezines that match your topic and offer to swap ads with the publisher. Many publishers will agree to this type of arrangement for a short period of time, especially if it is something of value to their subscribers.

6. Participate in online forums

7. Publish your url on everything you distribute (books, business cards, brochures, etc.)

8. Study everything you can about generating traffic.

This is extremely important since the Internet changes minute by minute. Subscribe to ezines, read ebooks, read the forums. All of these sources will help you stay current on the latest Internet trends.

9. Ask successful Internet marketers as many questions as you can think of.

Many Internet marketers want to help you to succeed, especially if you are one of their affiliates. If they help you succeed, they succeed. Remember, the only dumb question is the unasked question.

10. When you see a good idea, use it.

This should almost go without saying, but if you see a great idea, that you can easily implement while doing your research then by all means use it. That is why you are doing all of this research in the first place, right?

113 Facts About Animal Cruelty

Animals caught in traps can suffer for days before succumbing to exposure, shock, or attacks by predators. Traps often kill "non-target" animals, including dogs and endangered species. To cut costs, fur farmers pack animals into small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps back and forth. Crowding and confinement is especially distressing to minks- solitary animals who occupy up to 2,500 acres of wetland in the wild. The frustration of life in a cage leads minks to self-mutilate- biting their skin, tails, feet- or frantically pace and circle endlessly. "PETA investigators witnessed rampant cruelty to animals. Workers beat pigs with metal rods and jabbed pins into pigs' eyes and faces." Snakes and lizards are skinned alive because of the belief that live flaying makes leather more supple. Piglets are separated from their mothers when they are as young as 10 days old. Once her piglets are gone, the sow is impregnated again, and the cycle continues for three or four years before she is slaughtered. Approximately 3 to 4 million cats and dogs- many of them healthy, young, and adoptable- must be euthanized in animal shelters every year. Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do- to nourish their young - but on dairy farms calves are taken away at 1 day old. 1 day old calves are fed milk replacements (including cattle blood) so that their mothers' milk can be sold to humans. Animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs. Each year, approximately 10,000 bulls die in bullfights. Most cows are intensively confined, unable to fulfill their most basic desires, such as nursing their calves, even for a single day. Cows are fed unnatural, high-protein diets-which include dead chickens, pigs, and other animals. Overall, factory-farmed animals, including those on dairy farms, produce 1.65 billion tons of manure each year. Kid goats are boiled alive to make gloves. The skins of unborn calves and lambs - some aborted, others from slaughtered pregnant cows - are considered "luxurious." About 285 million hens are raised for eggs in the US. In tiny spaces so small they cannot move a wing. The wire mesh of the cages rubs off hens feathers, chafes their skin, and causes their feet to become crippled. Before 1986, only four states had felony animal cruelty laws. Glue traps cause terror and agony to any animals who touch them, leaving them to suffer for days. In one study, 70% of animal abusers also had records for other crimes. Sealers often hook baby seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging their fur, then drag them across the ice to skin them. Arsenic-laced additives are mixed into the feed of about 70 percent of the chickens raised for food. Every year, nearly a million seals worldwide are subjected to painful and often lingering deaths, largely for the sake of fashion. Scientists estimate that 100 species go extinct every day! That's about one species every 15 minutes. Every year in the US, 50 million male piglets are castrated (usually without being given any painkillers). More than 15 million warm-blooded animals are used in research every year. The methods used in fur factory farms are designed to maximize profits, almost always at the expense of the animals. To test cosmetics, cleaners, and other products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year. In extremely crowded conditions, piglets are prone to stress-related behavior such as cannibalism and tail-biting. Farmers often chop off piglets' tails and use pliers to break off the ends of their teeth- without giving them any painkillers. For identification purposes, farmers cut out chunks of young pigs ears. Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. For fur, small animals may be crammed into boxes and poisoned with hot, unfiltered engine exhaust from a truck. Engine exhaust is not always lethal, and some animals wake up while they are being skinned. Larger animals have clamps attached to or rods forced into their mouth or anus so they can be painfully electrocuted. Bird poisons attack birds' nervous systems, causing them to suffer seizures, erratic flight, and tremors for hours before dying. If you drink milk, you're subsidizing the veal industry. Male calves are often taken away from their mothers at 1 day old, chained in tiny stalls for 3-18 weeks, and raised for veal. After they are taken from their mothers, piglets are confined to pens until they are separated to be raised for breeding or meat. Although chickens can live for more than a decade, hens raised for their eggs are exhausted and killed by age 2. More than 100 million "spent" hens are killed in slaughterhouses every year. Forty-five states currently have felony provisions for animal cruelty. (Those without are AK, ID, MS, ND and SD.) Dogs used for fighting are chained, taunted, and starved to trigger extreme survival instincts and encourage aggressiveness. Dogs that lose fights (or refuse) are often abandoned, tortured, set on fire, electrocuted, shot, drowned, or beaten to death. Cows on average product 16 lbs of milk per day. With hormones, antibiotics, and genetic manipulation? 54 lbs a day. Humane treatment is not a priority for those who poach and hunt animals to obtain their skin. Alligators on farms may be beaten with hammers and axes, sometimes remaining conscious and in pain for 2 hours after skinning. Investigation of animal abuse is often the first point of social services intervention for a family in trouble. A Canadian Police study found that 70 percent of people arrested for animal cruelty had past records of other violent crimes. Dog fighting and cock-fighting are illegal in all 50 states. Hoarding of animals exists in virtually every community. Well-intentioned people overwhelmed by animal overpopulation crisis. The consequences for hoarders, their human dependents, animals, and the community are extremely serious- and often fatal for animals. Declawing is a painful mutilation that involves 10 amputations - not just the nails - but the ends of toes (bone and all). The long-term effects of declawing include skin and bladder problems and the gradual weakening of cats' legs, shoulders, and back. Declawing is both painful and traumatic, and it has been outlawed in Germany and other parts of Europe as a form of cruelty. Kangaroos are slaughtered by the millions every year; their skins are considered prime material for soccer shoes. Across the US, 6 to 8 million stray and abandoned animals enter animal shelters every year, and about half must be euthanized. In California, America's top milk-producing state, manure from dairy farms has poisoned hundreds of square miles of groundwater. Each of the more than 1 million cows on the state's dairy farms excrete 18 gallons of manure daily. Every year, the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals and tans their skins and hides. Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies. Every year, millions of animals are killed for the clothing industry. An immeasurable amount of suffering goes into every fur-trimmed jacket, leather belt, and wool sweater. Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States. On any given day in the U.S., there are more than 65 million pigs on factory farms, and 112 million are killed for food each year. Every year, dogs suffer and die when left in a parked car- even for "just a minute" - parked cars are deathtraps for dogs. Dog owners: On a 78 degree F day, the temperature in a shaded car is 90°F, in the sun it can climb to 160°F in minutes. 98% of Americans consider pets to be companions or members of the family. For medical experimentation animals can be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged. Regardless of how trivial or painful animal experiments may be, none are prohibited by law. When valid non-animal research methods are available, no law requires experimenters to use such methods instead of animals. On average it takes 1,000 dogs to maintain a mid-sized racetrack operation. There are over 30 tracks in the United States. Female cows are artificially inseminated shortly after their first birthdays. Happy birthday! Birds don't belong in cages. Bored, lonely, denied the opportunity to fly, deprived of companionship... Many birds become neurotic in cages - pulling out feathers, bobbing their heads incessantly, and repeatedly pecking. According to industry reports, more than 1 million pigs die en route to slaughter each year. More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetic tests, biology lessons, etc. Approximately 9 billion chickens are raised and killed for meat each year in the U.S. The industry refers to chickens as "broilers" and raises them in huge, ammonia-filled, windowless sheds with artificial lighting. Some chickens spend their entire lives standing on concrete floors. Some chickens are confined to massive, crowded lots, where they are forced to live amid their own waste. Neglect/Abandonment is the most prevalent form of animal abuse (approximately 36% of all animal abuse cases.) Cows are treated like milk-producing machines and are genetically manipulated and pumped full of antibiotics and hormones. Foie gras is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of ducks and geese who have been cruelly force-fed. The best way to save cows from the misery of factory farms is to stop buying milk and other dairy products. Discover soy! A typical slaughterhouse kills about 1,000 hogs per hour. The sheer number of animals killed makes it impossible for pigs' deaths to be humane and painless. Because of improper stunning, many hogs are alive when they reach the scalding hot water baths. 13% of intentional animal abuse cases involve domestic violence. Animal cruelty problems are people problems. When animals are abused, people are at risk. Instead of improving conditions for animals, the dairy industry is exploring the use of genetically manipulated cattle. More than half the fur in the US comes from China, where millions of dogs and cats are bludgeoned, hanged, and bled to death. Millions of pounds of antibiotics are fed to chickens, who metabolize only about 20 percent of the drugs fed to them. The 3 trillion pounds of waste produced by factory-farmed animals every year is usually used to fertilize crops. Chaining dogs, while unfortunately legal in most areas, is one of the cruelest punishments imaginable for social animals. Tens of thousands of horses from the United States are slaughtered every year to be used for horsemeat in Europe and Asia. Since the last horse slaughter plants in the US were closed in 2007, thousands of horses have been shipped to Canada/Mexico. Abusers kill, harm, or threaten children's pets to coerce them into sexual abuse or to force them to remain silent about abuse. There are no federal laws to regulate the voltage or use of electric prods on pigs. Forty-one of the 45 state felony animal cruelty laws were enacted in the last two decades. In the United States, 1.13 million animals were used in experiments in 2009, plus an estimated 100 million mice and rats. As a result of disease, pesticides, and climate changes, the honeybee population has been nearly decimated. Many studies have found a link between cruelty to animals and other forms of interpersonal violence. Cows have a natural lifespan of about 20 years and can produce milk for eight or nine years. A fur coat is pretty cool- for an animal to wear. Eighteen red foxes are killed to make one fox-fur coat, 55 minks to make a mink coat. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available: suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning. In addition to diarrhea, pneumonia, and lameness, calves raised for veal are terrified and desperate for their mothers. During Canada's annual commercial seal slaughter, as many as 300,000 seals are shot or bludgeoned.

Boxer Dog Behavior Characteristics And Training

The Boxer breed is a fantastic dog that often has a mistaken perception as being a fussy and slightly skittish animal. In fact this is far from the truth, by nature they need a great amount of attention and love and without this they become skittish. Indeed, if you lead a very active lifestyle that means you will have to spend a lot of time away from the home then you are probably wise not to get a Boxer dog.

Having said that, if you do decide to get a Boxer then here are some facts about Boxer dogs. It will start by helping you select the best boxer puppy for your family.

Dog

Do your research before selecting an individual puppy or a litter to select from. Some common wisdom before making a selection is to view the parents of the litter first. This will give you an some pointers on the temperament and behavior of the parents and an indication of how the puppies may grow up to behave.

It is also a good idea to find a boxer from a non commercial breeder who does it for the love of it rather than to make money. This means the dogs are likely to be well cared for and be more sociable.

According to the American Kennel Club the Boxer breed is in the top ten of purebred dogs in terms of popularity. They are a medium sized dog that are energetic and very inquisitive. Consequently they will require more attention and cost more than a small toy breed of dog.

Food costs and other expenses like treats and toys will be more for a Boxer than many other breeds. Although being a short haired dog you will not need to do much grooming. For some strange reason they are not keen on water either so that will make bathing a lot of fun !

Boxers are noted for being very social animals. They love living in a family unit and crave attention and affection. You should strive to keep them active and busy. Left alone they will become bored and lonely. This can lead to bad behavioral habits and quite destructive tendencies.

Space is important to a Boxer dog. It is not practical to keep a dog such a this in an apartment. It needs a home with an ample backyard where it can run around and tire itself out. You can plant dog treats in areas of the yard so that your pet will rummage around and be kept active. Get it lots of toys to keep it busy too. Boxers will spend many hours ragging toys and this fits their nature perfectly.

The Excessive energy levels of your boxer may make it harder to obedience train. They will lose focus quickly, consequently positive reinforcement training where you are catching the dogs attention is the best training method.

Start the training early, when they are puppies. This includes socializing them with other family members and animals. A well adjusted dog is generally happier and more open to training methods.

Given their exuberant nature you may want to make the environment where the dog is trained quiet and distraction free. Thus your pet may not be the best pupil in a group obedience training class with lots of other pooches to distract it. Obedience training is a big task when it comes to any dog, let alone a Boxer but it is certainly worth making this commitment. They are an intelligent animal and love the close relationship with their owner that obedience training requires.

Common Collie Health Problems

As with any breed of dog there is always the risk of health problems. With the Collie there are different health concerns, such as Collie nose, CHD (Canine Hip Dysplasia), CEA (Collie eye abnormalities), Epilepsy, Bloat and Kennel Cough.

Collie nose is a condition that causes lesions to the nose, lips and eyelids. This condition is caused by a lack of skin pigment and is aggravated by sunlight. Treatment can include applications of sunscreen, limited exposure to direct sunlight and permanent tattooing of the skin to make the pigment darker.

Dog

Due to the Collie being a large breed of dog they have a higher risk for certain health problems, one of which is Canine Hip Dysplasia, where there is an abnormal formation of the hip joint. This will commonly develop after eight months of age when the Collie reaches skeletal maturity.

Possible causes could be genetics, lack of activity, poor diet or obesity. Dogs that are given little exercise and fed a low protein dog food have both a lack of activity and a poor diet and will have a higher chance of developing Canine Hip Dysplasia then that of an active dog who is fed a healthy diet. Canine Hip Dysplasia can either have a gradual or sudden onset and can sometimes cause severe pain. This can be diagnosed with an x-ray of the hips.

Untreated, it can lead to crippling lameness and arthritis, which can both be very painful. A preventive treatment for CHD includes keeping your dog active, on a healthy diet and weight management. Treatments can include medication or surgical intervention.

CEA (Collie eye abnormalities) is an inherited disease caused by a genetic defect, and is where the eyes do not develop normally. It involves the cornea, sclera and retina. Collie eye abnormality can have mild effects or total blindness; unfortunately there is no treatment for this disease. There are tests that can be done on the parents to assess the risks of the offspring developing this condition before breeding the animal.

Collie health problems can also include epilepsy, which is a neurological condition that causes the development of seizures. Epilepsy can be either a congenital (inherited) or acquired disease. The seizures can be controlled with medication.

Bloat can be a serious condition which involves gastric dilation, where the stomach fills with air and puts pressure on the other organs. When this happens the stomach can twist and pinch off the blood supply to the stomach. When this happens the health of the animal will deteriorate rapidly. This condition requires immediate assistance of a veterinarian and is very painful to the animal, not to mention costly.

Kennel Cough is a dry cough accompanied by thick nasal drainage, fever and lethargy. This can be caused by one of many factors, including overcrowded kennels and a stressful environment. Luckily, this condition can easily be treated with a course of antibiotics.

As you can see there are many health concerns for the Collie, as there are with any animal. Keeping Collie health problems from affecting your Collie can be as simple as following a good exercise and diet plan. Keep kennels clean and spacious, and pay attention to your Collie so that you will be quick to recognize unusual behavior. These simple steps can help to assure that you and your Collie will have many wonderful years together.

Fencing Options For Your Home and Property

"Good fences make good neighbors," wrote a beloved American poet decades ago. There is some truth in the idea that some of us function better when we know and respect common boundaries. This can be especially true when we put up fences in our lawns and around our property to keep trespassers out and the children or pets in. Still, it's not easy choosing where to put up fencing, the type that will best fit a property, and the most effective for a particular purpose. Here are a few tips that might help as you face this particular dilemma.

1. Choose a style that meshes with your property style. For example, if your home is a Victorian, look for old-fashioned fencing designs that bring back the days of old, like a white picket style. Instead of the painted wood framework that quickly peels and can easily rot, you can now get vinyl fences that look like traditional wood but will actually hold up much longer and require little maintenance.

YOUR DOG

2. Look for fencing that will fit your property structure. For example, even if you love wrought iron spikes, they may not look that great on your country farmhouse lawn. Choose a design that flows with the overall theme of your yard or lawn. You might want to get a few sample pieces and try them in various places of your open space to see how they fit. Or check out images on the Internet and possibly drive around the neighborhood for some ideas on how to use fencing in creative ways.

3. Get the type of fencing that serves your purposes. An invisible dog fence will help to keep your pets from wandering off the premises. But it will not keep other dogs or animals from approaching your dog. You may need a chain link fence to prevent other kids or pets from wandering over your lawn and perhaps doing damage or causing problems by digging up a flowerbed or chasing your cats.

4. Decorative fencing adds attractive accents. Consider adding a wooden rail fence in just a corner of your yard as a focus point, perhaps accented by clusters of daffodils or mums. A low vinyl picket fence makes a nice border along the side of the garage or shed. Use your creativity while shopping at lawn and garden stores or browsing catalogs to select a useful or attractive fence that will add to your property's value.

Fences can be functional or aesthetic in nature; it's really up to you. There are numerous styles, materials, and designs available today, and you can shop online if you aren't able to get out to the stores. Fencing all or part of your property can help to protect it, discourage intruders, and make it attractive simultaneously. Don't overlook fencing options when planning next year's lawn or garden.

How to Handle a Biting Dog

Now if your dog bites anyone and everything then you know how hard they can be to handle. However, if you are ever going to break your dogs biting habit you know that you're going to have to handle him. Now I know that at times it can be a daunting task in handling your dog that bites, but you will want to try to figure out how to break that habit quickly.

Handling a biting dog you might want to talk to your veterinarian first because he might have some great ideas on how to handle your biting dog. If he does not have any ideas he will probably know of some animal obedience classes that could help control your dogs biting habit which will make him easier to handle. Now granted for a dog biting problem you will probably need to find a dog obedience program that will allow you to have one on one training until the biting problem can be contained.

Dog

The next thing that you can try in handling your dog that bites is trying a wide variety of collars that might help him out. I know that when I had a super shy and nervous dog that would act like she would bite I had to use a gentle leader. Now if your dog bites you as well then the gentle leader might be very difficult to put on. I do know that the gentle leader once on would keep her from being able to turn her head all the way around to bite at anything. That is because the gentle leader will help you control where the head is going to be going to.

The other thing that you can consider while handling your dog that bites is determining why he is biting. For some dogs if they are starting to bite or never stopped biting it could be because of a health problem. That is also another thing that you will want to discuss with your veterinarian. I know that with my dog his biting problem was because he was coming down with epilepsy and that is how he told us.

Handling your dog that bites can be a challenge for all people involved in the care of the dog. However, you will want to control the biting habit as quickly as possible to assure that your dog will not bite anyone. You can use a wide variety of methods, but the one that will probably work best would be one on one training with an animal behavior specialist.

How to Handle a Biting Dog

I live in Ohio with my wonderful husband and two beautiful children. I have two English Mastiff puppies, a Lab-Retriever, and a Yorkie Poo. I also have two cats who came to us as strays. I love sewing, crocheting, and managing to take care of my zoo at the house. Since I have so many pets I have a strong interest in animal issues. Dog Kennel Construction and Building Plans

A well built dog kennel can be a nice feature of any backyard. Of course, it's also very practical, and you will save hundreds of dollars by taking a DIY approach to dog kennel construction. It's definitely one of the easier woodworking projects out there, and don't require much in terms of equipment. This article addresses the various dog house designs, and helps you pick the right plan for your particular needs.

The Wooden Dog House

Dog

The wooden dog house is by far the most popular choice for DIY enthusiasts. Lumber is easy to obtain, it's relatively cheap, and it's very simple to work with. You can ask your local lumber yard which species of timber is best for dog kennels, but you'll generally find that treated pine is the best in terms of all-round value.

If you've got a few extra dimes in your pocket, you can go for high grade woods like cedar. They don't chemically treat cedar, as it already contains a natural enzyme that makes it water and rot resistant. Great if you don't particularly like chemicals.

The Brick Dog House

Brick is another great material for dog kennel construction. It looks great, and is extremely solid. The only problem is that it's very heavy. This means that you can't easily move the kennel around, so it really becomes part of your property. It also tend to get quite cold in winter.

The Sheet Metal Dog House

The cheapest material to build your dog kennel from is sheet metal. You generally can't build an entire kennel from it, but it can significantly reduce the cost of building from wood. It also acts as a great way to keep the internal climate cool. It's best attached to the walls and roof.

Pet Rat Care - Mammary Tumors

Tumors are one of the most common health problems in unspayed female rats. These are usually benign (non cancerous) mammary tumors that are stimulated by estrogen and occur in approximately 17% to 77% of female rats. Mammary tumors usually occur at around 18 months when females enter menopause and stop ovulating.

These tumors can grow very fast on your pet rat. In some cases, if left untreated, they can cause death by pressing on vital organs, causing internal bleeding or impairing your pets movements. Many times your female rat will be unable to eat sufficient food to sustain herself and the tumor.

SPAYING

Mammary tumors usually start as distinct small lumps under the skin. They are commonly found near the females nipples under the font legs, on the tummy and near the groin area. The lump should feel loose and separate from the rat in the fact it can be moved around under the skin. If this is the case with the lump you have detected, the odds are it is benign.

Mammary tumors that contain pockets of milk can grow very rapidly and to huge sizes - upto 10 cm across - and are usually round in shape. If the lump you have located feels attached, don't panic, this may still be a benign tumor and therefore removable. Sometimes, the mammary tumors will grow underneath tissue making it feel attached when examined.

Treatment.

If you pet rat develops a mammary tumor the most common cause of treatment is surgical removal.

This is best performed whilst the lump is still small and is usually a simple procedure as the tumor is located under the rats skin, not in the abdominal cavity. However, if you rat is aged or suffering some other health issue, the vet may advise against surgery due to risk involve with anesthesia, etc.

Your pet may also develop more than one mammary tumor in her life time. So once one has been diagnosed, be sure to check her weekly as part of your pet rat care plan for any further lumps developing.

Prevention.

There are a few causes that can be taken when looking at preventing tumors from developing in your pet. None are 100% successful at this stage but still worthwhile considering.

Spaying is considered the most success form of prevention. There are many argument for and against spaying healthy young rats in order to prevent a condition later in life that may or may not occur. However, it may also be said that spayed female pet rats risk of developing mammary tumors is reduced to about 4%.

Genetics can play a part in determining whether or not your pet rat is more susceptible to tumors or not. If possible, check the history of female relatives of your rat to see if her line is more prone than not. If you own a female from a line that do tend to develop tumors, it may well be worth considering spaying her whilst she is young to reduce her risk.

Diet can be used to reduce the risk of tumors. Ensure a good diet that is low-fat and full of fresh fruit and vegetables is part of your pet care plan. Soybeans, broccoli and tomatoes are all great feed components. Also try feeding your female rat soy products such as miso or soybean powder. Add the powder to water or to soy milk to make a drink or mixed as a paste it can be spread on a favorite treat

Gender can also be consider. If you really wish to avoid possible heartbreak created by tumors in your pet then consider boy rats instead. Some boy rats will develop mammary tumors but it is very uncommon.

Cat Behaviour Problems - Could It Be A Communication Problem?

If you have a bad cat, which has behaviour problems; such as biting, spraying, not eating, scratching etc. It is likely that there is a communication problem between you and your cat.

Some cat behaviour problems are inherent to cats, it is what they do naturally and only through training your cat will you be able to stop the bad behaviour. However, sometimes your cat will be trying to tell you something.

SPAYING

If your cat has stopped using the litter box and is instead urinating around your house, this could be a sign that something is wrong. Often however this is a way of territorial marking for male cats, and neutering the cat will stop this particular behaviour problem. However it could be something a little more serious. For example if your cat has already been neutered and starts to spray around the house it could be a sign that your cat is ill, or your cat may be unhappy about a change in the house. Try and get to the bottom of the problem and see if your cat returns to normal. If your cat continues then you should seek the advice of your vet as this may not be a cat behaviour problem it may actually be a sign of diminishing health with old age and your vet can aid your cat as much as possible.

Other cat behaviour problems that owners face, may be a simple thing such as the cat swiping at the owners legs. This could be down to an annoyance. If the owner has gone on holiday and left the cat in the care of others, often cats can get upset and they will remember this and retaliate when the owner returns. A cat swiping at the owners legs could also be a warning, if you or someone else has over stepped the cats boundaries, it will find a solution to keep you away, if swiping at your legs works then the cat will continue doing it.

Even scratching the furniture is seen as a cat behaviour problem, where as this is actually a very natural thing for cats to do. In the wild they will scratch against wood to shed the outer layers of their claws, where as a domestic cat doesn't usually have this luxury. As this is a natural thing to do you will need to train your cat to use a scratching post instead of your antique furniture!

As you can see often cat behaviour problems as not problems at all, they might be a natural behaviour or a way of trying to communicate a problem with the owner. Often these problems can be solved very easily by learning to understand your cat.

Pediatric Spay-Neuter - The Basics

If you've recently adopted a new puppy or kitten, you may have been presented with the option for "pediatric spay/neuter surgery" and you may not have been familiar with the process, or even comfortable with the concept. We've all become accustomed to the standard 6-9 month standard for spaying or neutering, and the idea of operating on a small animal, as young as 4-6 weeks of age, sounds rather experimental, possibly ineffective, and even dangerous.

Here are some facts about early-age spay/neuter procedures: In the 1940's and 50's, veterinarians had much more primitive anesthetics, equipment, and tools. Anesthetics weren't always safe, especially for young animals and the sophisticated surgical instruments that veterinarians use today to find a tiny uterus didn't even exist yet. Since a uterus is larger and easier to find after an estrus, or after having a litter, the advice veterinarians of the past frequently gave was to wait until after the first estrus or after the animal had had one litter. Waiting made the procedure easier for them.

SPAYING

For many years, animal shelters and humane organizations have had policies requiring new pet owners to have the animal neutered 'as soon as possible', but realistically, there has never been a way to enforce this requirement, and too many animals have left the shelter unsterilized, only to end up contributing to our already overwhelming pet overpopulation problem, despite the shelter's good intentions.

From the standpoint of effectively controlling pet populations, the best time for sterilizing dogs and cats - the optimum time - is prior to puberty, eliminating any possibility of the animal producing offspring. It's important to remember that the single largest cause of death in companion animals is homelessness due to overpopulation.

The arguments for early-age spay/neuter:

* Overpopulation and the resulting neglect, suffering, euthanasia -- early-age spay/neuter completely eliminates the possibility of unwanted litters.

* It avoids heat cycles completely: unwelcome 'visitors' fighting on the lawn, females howling and yowling!

* Neutered males are less likely to roam and fight, thus preventing injuries, spread of disease, and costly veterinary expenses. It has been estimated that 80% of dogs killed by cars and 80% of Feline AIDS cases are unneutered males.

* Better-behaved pets -- neutered pets rarely spray mark, roam and fight. 85% of bites involve unneutered dogs.

* Healthier pets -- neutered males don't have the testicular cancer or prostate problems common in intact dogs. Females spayed before their first heat cycle have 96% less breast cancer. Their risk of uterine infection is dramatically decreased, not to mention the many complications associated with pregnancy, whelping or raising a litter.

* It's safe -- the mortality rate is lower than that of the standard 6-9 month sterilization procedure.

* It's less traumatic for the pet -- young animals heal faster and are lower surgical risks than older animals who may be obese, in heat, pregnant, or ill. Young animals generally wake up faster after anesthesia.

Many humane shelters across the country now endorse spaying and neutering at the time of adoption. If yours didn't, then please ask your vet to perform a pediatric or early-age spay/neuter (also sometimes called juvenile spay/neuter) on your new pet. They should be able to address any questions or concerns you may have. For more information, you may also visit http://www.spayusa.org.

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the United States, while each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. Early spay/neuter is one of the easiest, most obvious solutions to the problem.

Kitten Bad Breath

Kitten bad breath is not a common problem for new kitten owners, but some people do find that their kittens breath smells bad. Not surprisingly, bad breath in cats and kittens can be caused by the same things that cause halitosis in humans - gum or dental problems, respiratory problems, or underlying disease. There are also a few things particular to cats that can cause an unpleasant odor on the breath.

Feline bad breath is often caused by tartar build up on the teeth. Just like in dogs and humans, tartar on the teeth fosters the growth of oral bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds, airborne molecules that smell very unpleasant. Although tartar has not generally had time to accumulate enough to cause kitten bad breath, you should check the condition of your kitten's teeth and gums to be sure there is no tartar or inflammation there. If you see signs of trouble, a trip to the vet is probably in order.

SPAYING

Respiratory problems can also be a cause of kitten bad breath. This is usually easy to pinpoint because it will be accompanied by signs of respiratory illness. Again, like humans and dogs, cats can get viral or bacterial infections of the nasal passages, throat and lungs. In turn these infections can encourage the growth of bacteria and may cause feline bad breath. If your cat has a respiratory infection accompanied by bad breath, the breath problem should resolve as soon as the cat recovers.

Another unusual cause of feline bad breath can be underlying illness - some metabolic disorders and organ problems such as kidney disease can cause an unusual odor on the breath. In most cases, the odor will not the typical sulfur smell of classic halitosis, but may still be quite unpleasant. A kitten bad breath problem that can't be attributed to any other common cause may be a sign that your kitten has a more serious problem that should immediately be assessed by a vet.

One cause of feline bad breath that is particular to cats is feline acne. If your cat has feline acne, you will see black specks or bumps on the cat's chin. These black spots are a buildup of secretions from the animal's glands, and the affected area can also be a site for the proliferation of colonizing bacteria. This unhealthy area can be the source of an unpleasant odor around the mouth, so part of your search for the cause of kitten bad breath should be an examination of your cat's chin. Feline acne can be treated with disinfectants: consult your vet for professional advice.

Dog Training - How to Train Your Dog to Guard

Dogs like human beings are of different types. While some are found to be more aggressive, there are also many who are simply bovines. For this reason, if you have a desire to have a guard dog, you shall have to depend on the very breed. Now who can be a guard dog? Any dog that is properly trained to prevent the intrusion of the burglars and also unwanted visitors is known as a guard dog. But the success of this depends on the mode of training and accordingly it depends on the trainer.

Now, if you are the owner of a dog, you can also be the best trainer. The reason is ostensible since as the owner you can comprehend your pet than anyone else. However you shall have to depend on the breed since any other kind of dog may fail to go through the training. In this case the most popular breeds are of the Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherd. They are found to be worthy candidates due to their inherent natures to guard and can also adopt aggressive stances whenever necessary. Well there are some essential conditions that must be fulfilled. While on one hand the very dog must be courageous, sharp and committed to work, the owner must have the requisite determination, prowess and also endurance. The ideal combination of these two can turn out a successful guard dog.

Dog

This is just the beginning. But you don't have to be anxious since adequate process may satisfy your purpose without more ado. For this there is the need of a careful handling and also a decisive planning. Now there are various types of guard dog training and at the same time there are also different levels depending on the adaptability of the dog. You should decide this as you are the trainer. You can also search for the needed method of training on the Internet. But all depend on how much effective you want to make your dog. I presume that you want the best and so the training ought to be rigorous. You should begin with both of obedience and command training as these forms the basis of a prolific coordination. Nevertheless you must establish yourself as the leader.

It's necessary for you to be clear to yourself. If you want that your dog should guard a specific area of the house, the training pattern must be of one form. But it will be different if you want to assign more similar responsibilities. You, therefore, should train it to keep itself unresponsive to other dogs, cats and also insects. It may often interact with them and thus its concentration may be distracted. It's also the high time to control its barking since ceaseless barking of a guard dog may trivialize the entire issue. It should be restricted and should be used only to make you alert regarding any strange development. You should also train it to jump or attack whenever necessary.

But through the training you must make it self-possessed and also energetic. It's the cardinal principle.

Is Your Dog Homosexual? How to Stop Dog Humping

It's totally embarrassing. I'm in the park with my Jack Russell and he's humping another dog. I think to myself, "How do I stop my dog from humping others?" I watch other canine owners in the park get that same embarrassed look on their faces when their pup starts mounting others. They sheepishly apologize, yet have no clue as to how to stop dog humping. You can stop dog humping, but first, you'll need to understand why they mount each other. Then, I'll give you some tips on how to break this bad habit.

Fido is Not Homosexual

SPAYING

When I saw my Jack, hump another male pooch, I thought that meant he was "gay. Likewise, when I saw female mounting other female pooches, I thought that she was lesbian. Then I saw the oddest thing: my male was humping the face of another male! I thought I'd die of embarrassment. When I expressed my concern about my dog's sexual preference to another person who happened to be in attendance of this embarrassing scene, this person explained to me that my pooch was just doing what all dogs do - in other words, my Jack was not gay or even looking for sexual pleasure by humping. Then why was he doing it?

The Need to Dominate

Every pack has a pecking order. In order to establish dominance, canines will attempt to hump other canines. By humping or mounting alpha status is established. Sometimes secretions are left after humping. This secretion allows other dogs to know that this particular dog is submissive.

Should You Stop Dog Humping?

Since mounting is one of several ways in leadership is established in the pack, and since a pecking order is natural and necessary in a pack, why would you want to stop dog humping? I mean, isn't it necessary for the survival of the pack to know who is in charge and in what order? Yes, it's necessary for the survival of dogs to establish a pecking order. But when your pet tries to hump everyone (including you, your guests, and your neighbors) and everything (your furniture, your handbag, etc.) it's a sign of dominance/aggression and you must stop dog humping.

Neutering and Spaying is a Must

The first crucial step in curbing your pet's dominant/aggressive behavior is neutering and/or spaying. It's important to neuter/spay your pet for a few reasons. One reason is that neutered/spayed dogs display less aggression because their hormone levels have dropped significantly once they've been altered. Dogs calm down and are friendlier and less competitive with one another once they've been fixed. Another reason you should neuter your pet is to lessen the chance of unwanted puppies. Thousands of puppies are abandoned each year because of overpopulation.

Start Dog Training

Certain canines have a propensity for dominance. That means they will either try to hump other dogs, rough house with them, or bully in order to establish their position. After your dog has been neutered/spayed, you should start a rigorous dog training program. Your dog training program should consist of the basic commands like sit, stay, come. But you want to stop dog humping, so that behavior would go under dog training aggression.

Get Cheap Effective Dog Training

Bringing Home a Second Dog

Bringing a second dog home requires a lot of thought. It means a complete change in your "normal" family routine. It matters not whether the new dog is a puppy or an adult.

There are many things to consider before you bring the new pet home.

Dog

It is not just a matter of bringing the new dog home and you all will live happily ever after (though that can be a remote possibility.)

You need to take time to think this new undertaking through and mull over these questions:

Read these questions a few times and answer them truthfully. Being truthful will help eliminate you making a mistake.

Some dogs really don't want a "companion," they are as happy as a clam being the "only dog."

The real question here is "is it you that wants a new dog?"

Once you have made up your mind and truly feel that another dog will be an added benefit to your household. There are a few more things to consider such as: puppy, young adult or an older dog. That will depend on your resident dog.

Puppies are probably easier to introduce to your current dog, as a puppy doesn't appear as an intruder, only as a pest.

If you decide on a puppy, please keep this in mind. Puppies do not realize they are supposed to behave in a certain way until they are about 4 months old.

Until they are old enough to know all this "dog stuff," it will be up to you to protect the puppy from the older dog and protect the older dog from the puppy.

The puppy will drive the older dog crazy at times. Puppies want to play; older dogs will play for a little while then want to stop.

It is up to you to give your older pet, free time away from "fluff and stuff."

Do not under any circumstances leave the puppy and older dog alone without supervision.

Always put the puppy in its crate or put your resident dog in a safe room if you are leaving the house or cannot supervise.

The older dog could unintentionally injure the puppy, if the puppy pesters the older dog too much.

Adding a young adult dog or an older dog to your household requires a lot more tact along with patience and planning. You are going to need help with this one.

Step number one; the dogs will have to meet on neutral ground. To do this you will need help of a friend or a relative (not a member of your household.)

The dogs need to meet in a place your dog has never been, that will be the neutral territory. It can be a park, a neighbor's yard, or if all else fails a parking lot.

Both dogs need to be on a leash and introduced casually. Allow them to do all the "doggy things," such as smelling each other, their stance may be rigid, but for the first meeting that is okay. However, if you hear growling or see lip curling, calmly move them apart.

Remain calm and do not be nervous, talk to the dogs in a "happy voice."

After a few minutes try to introduce them again, but do not let them get too close together.

If the growling and lip curling happens again it is a good bet that these two will not ever be friends.

Whatever you do, do not try to force a friendship. You will only be looking for a great deal of trouble when you get them home.

Dogs will fight and if they do not like each other, it can be disastrous for you and the dogs.

In looking for a new dog (not a puppy) try to find a dog whose personality matches that of your dog. If your dog is outgoing and friendly, find one that is equally so. If your dog is quiet and gentle, do not bring home a dog that is very active and playful, the match more than likely will not work.

Female dogs that have been the only dog in the house seem to have a harder time adjusting to a new "friend."

Dogs that have been socialized and get along well with other dogs have an easier time relating to a new dog in the household.

One of the first rules in raising a puppy is "socialize, socialize and socialize" some more. If you have followed that rule, adding a new dog should be easier.

Once the introductions have been made and it is time to bring the two dogs home a good suggestion is "do not bring them home together" in the same car. Let the person who helped you with the introduction bring the new dog home.

It is a suggested procedure that when you have both dogs at home you keep their leashes on them. It will be easier for you to keep control if you need to by having a leash to grab on to.

If the new dog is close in age to your resident dog there is bound to be a bit of aggression going on.

You now have a "pack," it will be necessary for the two dogs to decide which one is going to be second in charge (you are the real leader) and this decision may take some haggling.

Acceptable aggressive behavior should last for a few seconds (10 --20 seconds) and may consist of some growling, lip curling, snarling, snapping and possibly pinning one of the dogs down by the neck.

Unacceptable aggressive behavior would be biting to draw blood or any of the above behaviors that last more than a few seconds.

One of the dogs may exhibit submissive behavior and this is to be expected also. Barking like a puppy, rolling over on its back, tail between its legs, running away from the other dog are all acceptable submissive behaviors.

It may take the dogs a week or two to settle on who is the leader and while that is going on DO NOT let them alone together unsupervised.

Put the dogs in separate areas or in their crates, do not let them be together until you are certain they have settled their ranking and will get along.

The hardest thing for you will be following their decision especially if your first dog is no longer the "number one."

The important thing here is that you abide by their decision no matter how hard it will be for you.

The number one dog gets the first treats, is first out the door, is first to be fed and so on.

Speaking of feeding, give each dog their own bowls and their own eating spot, do not let one steal food from the other.

Expect your first dog to go through some stress and probably some misbehavior patterns as this new addition will be upsetting to it and the dog will need to adjust.

It is up to you to expect these problems and act accordingly. Remember your dog did not ask for a new friend. It was your idea. As the old saying goes "you made your bed now lie in it."

It may take a month or more for a routine to establish and peace to rein supreme once again in your household. If you keep the dogs apart when you are not home to supervise and you make the time they spend together "fun" they will soon become friends, maybe not "best friends," but close enough to enjoy being together.

Do not forget that you are the LEADER, the boss supreme, and you run the show, and both dogs need to follow your orders first.

Do not beat, hit or otherwise use force to make a point, be patient, stern if necessary and most of all CONSISTENT in what you are asking of the dogs.

One last point: exercise is the secret to keeping your dogs too tired to argue with each other. Exercise relieves their stress (and maybe yours. too) and tired dogs behave better.

Good luck and remember to have FUN.

Free Dog Training Tips - Train Your Dog

If your goal for Dog Training is to train your dog to do tricks or get rid of aggressive dog behavior, potty train, keep his barking from irritating your neighbors, get him to not jump all over your visitors, general dog care, or to just be able to trust him with your other pets, then Free Dog Training Tips is a great place to start.

stop your dog from barking

I have heard people claim that they were at their wits end and about ready to get rid of their dog. "My dog just doesn't get it!" or "Nobody can train my dog, he's too stupid." We think of sending the animal away to a professional dog trainer and hope that would solve our problems. The truth is that usually dog training requires training the owner as much as the dog itself. Even when the dog is trained by a professional it is often just a temporary fix. Eventually the dog returns to old habits. When a dog owner finally understands a few basic things, their dog seems to get smarter. To train your dog effectively is mostly a matter of understanding your dog better, and communicating with "Doggy Language."

YOUR DOG

Just like people, dogs are very social animals that crave love and security. Because of this, we find behavioral patterns that account for both their playfulness and trainability. Dogs demonstrate loyalty and devotion through their 'natural instincts as pack animals', which mimics the human concept of love and friendship. This is the main reason why so many of us, see our dog as one of our family, and believe it or not, dogs see us as one of their pack!

Throughout human history dogs have lived and worked with humans, one to the benefit of the other, and this type of inter species relationship has earned our dogs the title of, "Man's Best Friend."

Do to the natural instincts of the wild animal nature of our dog; it is important that behavior is modified to live with us in our family. Dogs must be pleasant to have around and we must feel that our children, friends, and other animals, are safe around our dog. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience by themselves, so dog training is a must.

That said dog training can be a difficult task. Many dog owners try to obedience train but fail and give up to soon. To train your dog effectively you must mix about five pounds of patience with ten pounds of love.

A very common mistake that many dog owners make is telling a dog to "Come" and then try to discipline him. The dog quickly learns that the word 'come' means, "You're in trouble and now you're going to be punished." Then the next time you want your dog inside, you go to the door and yell, "Come" and the dog runs away. You chase him down thinking "Stupid dog", then grab him and give him a stern, unhappy look and say, "How come you never come when I call you?" What our dog has learned is that the word "Come" means that you're angry. What we need our dog to understand is that 'Come' ALWAYS means good stuff, so get to me as quickly as possible. No exceptions; 'Come' means good, always.

And if you must discipline your dog, be sure to do it while your dog is in the act of misbehaving, such as digging holes. You must correct him while he is in the act, because he won't associate what he did a minute ago. If you must discipline, tell him to sit and then give him his stern scolding. Remember that correction should NEVER include harmful physical punishment, like a rolled up newspaper. This may make the dog stop the bad behavior in the short term, but in the long run it will make him fear you, instead doing what you want just to make you happy.

The last of the Free Dog Training Tips that I can give you for now, is to give lots of love and praise when training your dog. Most experts agree that this is the quickest way to train your dog to do anything. Your dog loves to please you, and when you give him that praise your dog will be the happiest animal on the planet, and will love you till their dying day. I encourage you to train your dog basic commands, and you can learn how to teach your dog or puppy to Sit, Stay and Come for free by visiting my web site!

Know What to Expect With Miniature Beagles

You've hunted around in a shelter or at Petfinder.com and see a really cute little dog described as a "Miniature Beagle". You go to the American Kennel Club (AKC) website and see there is no such breed as a miniature Beagle. What's going on here? Well, the dog could very well be a new trend in Beagle breeding - for "teacup" or sizes under twelve inches tall at the withers (highest point of the shoulder.)

Beagles themselves are miniature versions of the mighty Foxhounds (English or American) that are big, elegant, strong dogs. Beagles were bred for the hunt, as well as Jack Russels. A usual English foxhunting pack had a few "couples" of Beagles to get into places the big Foxhounds couldn't, and Jack Russels to get into the places even the Beagles couldn't get into. Beagles have always had a height variation in their breed. This is why in America they are shown in two classes - for Beagles up to thirteen inches at the withers and Beagles between thirteen and fifteen inches.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

Breeders have been purposefully breeding smaller and smaller size dogs for the fashionable crowd that likes to imitate Paris Hilton. Unfortunately, with any upsurge in popularity of any dog breed many wind up in shelters or are abandoned. Check with the shelter staff to see if they know why the miniature Beagle you are looking at was abandoned. Don't be surprised if they don't know.

According to most Beagle information websites and books, miniature Beagles (and regular sized Beagles) are fully-grown at nine months of age. Beagles have a reputation of being cleverer than their owners (one of the reasons why Snoopy was a Beagle). Usually, they need positive outlets for their huge reserves of energy. Miniature Beagles that are less than ten inches tall have been known to be more hyperactive than their bigger kin. Be sure the dog is thoroughly vetted, as miniature Beagles have been known to have health problems.

Although it might be tempting to breed your pet miniature Beagle, do yourself and the dog a favor by getting him neutered or her spayed as soon as they hit six months of age. Neutering and spaying cannot only protect the dog from some cancers, but will cut out the distraction of looking for a mate so they can focus on paying more attention to you. Leave dog breeding to the professionals.

Miniature Beagles are very social animals that love company. They also love to be the center of attention. Perhaps they can remember their days when miniature Beagles were the prized pets of European royalty in the 1300's - 1400's. Queen Elizabeth I was said to have one. Your home will, indeed be your miniature Beagle's castle. Your miniature Beagle will give you lots and lots of non-judgmental companionship, so be willing to give some to your dog in return.

Know What to Expect With Miniature Beagles

Michelle Adams has written hundreds of articles on contemporary canine culture, including about miniature Beagles. Sharing information, such as in this article, could help all Beagle types to be bred more responsibly.
