Boxer Dog Behavior Characteristics And Training

The Boxer breed is a fantastic dog that often has a mistaken perception as being a fussy and slightly skittish animal. In fact this is far from the truth, by nature they need a great amount of attention and love and without this they become skittish. Indeed, if you lead a very active lifestyle that means you will have to spend a lot of time away from the home then you are probably wise not to get a Boxer dog.

Having said that, if you do decide to get a Boxer then here are some facts about Boxer dogs. It will start by helping you select the best boxer puppy for your family.

Dog

Do your research before selecting an individual puppy or a litter to select from. Some common wisdom before making a selection is to view the parents of the litter first. This will give you an some pointers on the temperament and behavior of the parents and an indication of how the puppies may grow up to behave.

It is also a good idea to find a boxer from a non commercial breeder who does it for the love of it rather than to make money. This means the dogs are likely to be well cared for and be more sociable.

According to the American Kennel Club the Boxer breed is in the top ten of purebred dogs in terms of popularity. They are a medium sized dog that are energetic and very inquisitive. Consequently they will require more attention and cost more than a small toy breed of dog.

Food costs and other expenses like treats and toys will be more for a Boxer than many other breeds. Although being a short haired dog you will not need to do much grooming. For some strange reason they are not keen on water either so that will make bathing a lot of fun !

Boxers are noted for being very social animals. They love living in a family unit and crave attention and affection. You should strive to keep them active and busy. Left alone they will become bored and lonely. This can lead to bad behavioral habits and quite destructive tendencies.

Space is important to a Boxer dog. It is not practical to keep a dog such a this in an apartment. It needs a home with an ample backyard where it can run around and tire itself out. You can plant dog treats in areas of the yard so that your pet will rummage around and be kept active. Get it lots of toys to keep it busy too. Boxers will spend many hours ragging toys and this fits their nature perfectly.

The Excessive energy levels of your boxer may make it harder to obedience train. They will lose focus quickly, consequently positive reinforcement training where you are catching the dogs attention is the best training method.

Start the training early, when they are puppies. This includes socializing them with other family members and animals. A well adjusted dog is generally happier and more open to training methods.

Given their exuberant nature you may want to make the environment where the dog is trained quiet and distraction free. Thus your pet may not be the best pupil in a group obedience training class with lots of other pooches to distract it. Obedience training is a big task when it comes to any dog, let alone a Boxer but it is certainly worth making this commitment. They are an intelligent animal and love the close relationship with their owner that obedience training requires.

Dog Training - How to Train Your Dog to Guard

Dogs like human beings are of different types. While some are found to be more aggressive, there are also many who are simply bovines. For this reason, if you have a desire to have a guard dog, you shall have to depend on the very breed. Now who can be a guard dog? Any dog that is properly trained to prevent the intrusion of the burglars and also unwanted visitors is known as a guard dog. But the success of this depends on the mode of training and accordingly it depends on the trainer.

Now, if you are the owner of a dog, you can also be the best trainer. The reason is ostensible since as the owner you can comprehend your pet than anyone else. However you shall have to depend on the breed since any other kind of dog may fail to go through the training. In this case the most popular breeds are of the Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherd. They are found to be worthy candidates due to their inherent natures to guard and can also adopt aggressive stances whenever necessary. Well there are some essential conditions that must be fulfilled. While on one hand the very dog must be courageous, sharp and committed to work, the owner must have the requisite determination, prowess and also endurance. The ideal combination of these two can turn out a successful guard dog.

Dog

This is just the beginning. But you don't have to be anxious since adequate process may satisfy your purpose without more ado. For this there is the need of a careful handling and also a decisive planning. Now there are various types of guard dog training and at the same time there are also different levels depending on the adaptability of the dog. You should decide this as you are the trainer. You can also search for the needed method of training on the Internet. But all depend on how much effective you want to make your dog. I presume that you want the best and so the training ought to be rigorous. You should begin with both of obedience and command training as these forms the basis of a prolific coordination. Nevertheless you must establish yourself as the leader.

It's necessary for you to be clear to yourself. If you want that your dog should guard a specific area of the house, the training pattern must be of one form. But it will be different if you want to assign more similar responsibilities. You, therefore, should train it to keep itself unresponsive to other dogs, cats and also insects. It may often interact with them and thus its concentration may be distracted. It's also the high time to control its barking since ceaseless barking of a guard dog may trivialize the entire issue. It should be restricted and should be used only to make you alert regarding any strange development. You should also train it to jump or attack whenever necessary.

But through the training you must make it self-possessed and also energetic. It's the cardinal principle.

Free Dog Training Tips - Train Your Dog

If your goal for Dog Training is to train your dog to do tricks or get rid of aggressive dog behavior, potty train, keep his barking from irritating your neighbors, get him to not jump all over your visitors, general dog care, or to just be able to trust him with your other pets, then Free Dog Training Tips is a great place to start.

stop your dog from barking

I have heard people claim that they were at their wits end and about ready to get rid of their dog. "My dog just doesn't get it!" or "Nobody can train my dog, he's too stupid." We think of sending the animal away to a professional dog trainer and hope that would solve our problems. The truth is that usually dog training requires training the owner as much as the dog itself. Even when the dog is trained by a professional it is often just a temporary fix. Eventually the dog returns to old habits. When a dog owner finally understands a few basic things, their dog seems to get smarter. To train your dog effectively is mostly a matter of understanding your dog better, and communicating with "Doggy Language."

YOUR DOG

Just like people, dogs are very social animals that crave love and security. Because of this, we find behavioral patterns that account for both their playfulness and trainability. Dogs demonstrate loyalty and devotion through their 'natural instincts as pack animals', which mimics the human concept of love and friendship. This is the main reason why so many of us, see our dog as one of our family, and believe it or not, dogs see us as one of their pack!

Throughout human history dogs have lived and worked with humans, one to the benefit of the other, and this type of inter species relationship has earned our dogs the title of, "Man's Best Friend."

Do to the natural instincts of the wild animal nature of our dog; it is important that behavior is modified to live with us in our family. Dogs must be pleasant to have around and we must feel that our children, friends, and other animals, are safe around our dog. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience by themselves, so dog training is a must.

That said dog training can be a difficult task. Many dog owners try to obedience train but fail and give up to soon. To train your dog effectively you must mix about five pounds of patience with ten pounds of love.

A very common mistake that many dog owners make is telling a dog to "Come" and then try to discipline him. The dog quickly learns that the word 'come' means, "You're in trouble and now you're going to be punished." Then the next time you want your dog inside, you go to the door and yell, "Come" and the dog runs away. You chase him down thinking "Stupid dog", then grab him and give him a stern, unhappy look and say, "How come you never come when I call you?" What our dog has learned is that the word "Come" means that you're angry. What we need our dog to understand is that 'Come' ALWAYS means good stuff, so get to me as quickly as possible. No exceptions; 'Come' means good, always.

And if you must discipline your dog, be sure to do it while your dog is in the act of misbehaving, such as digging holes. You must correct him while he is in the act, because he won't associate what he did a minute ago. If you must discipline, tell him to sit and then give him his stern scolding. Remember that correction should NEVER include harmful physical punishment, like a rolled up newspaper. This may make the dog stop the bad behavior in the short term, but in the long run it will make him fear you, instead doing what you want just to make you happy.

The last of the Free Dog Training Tips that I can give you for now, is to give lots of love and praise when training your dog. Most experts agree that this is the quickest way to train your dog to do anything. Your dog loves to please you, and when you give him that praise your dog will be the happiest animal on the planet, and will love you till their dying day. I encourage you to train your dog basic commands, and you can learn how to teach your dog or puppy to Sit, Stay and Come for free by visiting my web site!

House Training a New Dog

Do you have a new dog that keeps using the "potty" where he's not supposed to? If you're reading this, I'd imagine that the answer to that question is yes.

dog crate

This is the sort of problem that can make the joy of dog ownership quickly turn into a nightmare. Obviously it's the sort of thing that something has to be done about as soon as possible. But what can be done?

Dog

You could hire a professional dog trainer to try to train your dog not to use the bathroom inside of the house but that would likely cost you a lot of money. Professional dog training sessions can cost over an hour! Imagine how quickly that would add up if your dog needed 10 training sessions to learn? That would be over 0!

For most people that's just way too much to spend.

You will be better off house training your new dog yourself. Not only will it be much cheaper but it's likely it will be far more effective if you learn the best techniques. You see, dogs often only learn to behave in a certain way at a certain place or in front of certain people. So what if your dog learns to behave correctly in front of your professional dog trainer at the dog trainer's center but he does not learn the correct behavior in front of you in your own house! That wouldn't be of much help at all.

You need your dog to trust you and to listen to what you say. That's why its' best for you to learn the proper dog training techniques yourself from a quality dog training guide and be your dog's own " dog trainer." With the right information you can quickly house train your new dog.

Advanced Dog Training - Teach Your Dog Some Advanced Tricks

One of the things that your dog needs to learn as early as possible is to come when it is called. If your dog is disobedient when you take it outside the home then this could prove problematic later on, it is vital that your dog learns to come when you call it. Come, sit and stay are all part of the basic training that all good owners give their dogs when they are small. Like most dog owners you probably started with house training your dog as a puppy and went on to certain behavior modification exercises, especially if your puppy is showing aggression.

dog costumes

Once your dog learns what is acceptable behavior you can then go on to make dog training fun. Your dog probably enjoys doing things with you and receiving extra praise and possibly a treat, and this is when you can undertake some more advanced training with your pet. You can teach your dog to fetch things for you because it will enjoy the praise you lavish on it and it will be even better if there is a treat at the end of it. Advanced dog training, like any other training, needs to be consistent and regular if you dog is really going to learn anything.

Dog

One of the best ways of teaching your dog new things is to turn every training session into a game, which stops them from becoming boring for both of you. Most dogs are always up for a treat but if you are not sure then just try tempting your dog and see whether it is interested in what you have to offer. If you want your dog to respond to other members of the family, especially when you are not around, then try involving them in come and call sessions with your dog.

If your yard is fenced in then it should be a great spot for this game. You and the other family member stand some distance apart, call your dog and when it comes tell it to sit and stay, and then the second person calls the dog to come. If the dog comes when it is called then the person involved should give it a treat and lavish praise, and the other family members involved should do the same. Eventually your dog will learn to come when called as a matter of course, and this will make both your lives so much easier.

Advanced Dog Training - Teach Your Dog Some Advanced Tricks

Training your dog, especially using advanced training methods, does require a considerable investment of time. If you normally take the dog out for most of its walks then you can use at least some of that period as a training period, other things can happen perhaps on a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon, depending on your time table. The main thing is that you have a regular time with your dog when training can be both useful and fun for you both. Dog Training: Handling Your Dog

Puppies, like their human masters, have unique personalities. Through interacting with your dog you will quickly discover what he likes and dislikes. When it comes to physically handling your dog you must be observant and learn to understand what your dog prefers.

pamper your dog

Some dogs love their ears tickled but others hate it; some dogs love to have their bellies rubbed; some dogs don't like having their tails touched. You have to learn to interpret your dogs' reactions and then you can comprehend what motivates it.

YOUR DOG

This knowledge will come in handy when you are handling your dog. If he does something you like and you know he loves a belly rub, then fuss over him while you rub his belly, telling him that good dogs get their bellies rubbed. He will love this. If he doesn't like having his ears tickled, don't do this when you are praising him because it will seem more like a punishment.

It is also very important to learn what sort of handling will soothe and calm your puppy and what kind of interaction will get your puppy excited.

Generally speaking, most dogs find it very soothing to have their chests stroked gently and slowly. If you combine this with a very calm tone of voice, your dog should find this very relaxing and reassuring.

On the other hand, handling your puppy roughly yet playfully around the head and rump combined with a high-pitched excitable voice should get your puppy geared up. In general, any sort of stroking your dog where your hands move very fast will indicate play and excitement to your dog.

These distinctions are noteworthy when it comes to training your puppy. When your puppy obeys a command, praise him using calm and soothing methods. This keeps him relaxed and concentrating on the task at hand. An excited and wound up puppy is just too carried away to be able to focus on learning anything.

The key point is to discover what kind of physical handling your dog finds soothing. Always try to handle your dog in this fashion as a positive training reward. When you have finished training and just want to have some fun, then its time to handle your dog in an excitable, playful way.

When you're training your dog, it's almost certainly your fault if the dog is not doing what you ask of it. This is why it is so vitally important that you do not lose your temper. So before you start to get angry at your dog, consider the following issues.

Have you clearly indicated to your dog what you want it to do? Are your expectations too high so that you're overstretching your dog's capabilities? Are you just doing the same old thing over and over again and your poor dog is just plain bored?

Quite often training issues can be attributed to handler errors. So think very carefully about the situation before you get angry with your dog. Remember that you are trying to establish a warm, loving relationship with your puppy and you do not want to do anything that may hamper that.

There of course will be times when punishment is required. On these occasions, do not lose your temper. Simply fit the reprimand to the crime. Your tone of voice will serve to indicate your level of displeasure with your dog. If your puppy commits a minor indiscretion, a quick "No!" or a little growl should be sufficient to let him know that you are displeased.

Your voice can be louder and sterner for more serious infractions. The important aspect of this process is that once you've reprimanded your dog, that's it. It's over. You must then return to cool on an emotional level. You simply cannot do this if you've lost your cool and become very angry.

Verbal reprimands must therefore be done in a controlled manner as much as possible. Try your best not to get cross with your dog. It will go a long way to building trust, warmth and love. Don't do anything that might interfere with this because it's worth it.

Training Your Dog - How to Train Your Dog Not to Jump Up on People

You may have experienced visiting another persons' house when you are almost knocked over by a dog jumping up on you that has not been trained. This is the way dogs greet each other in the wild. This may not be a problem when the dog is a puppy but they have a habit of growing up. Since there are people who do not like dogs, they will not appreciate this activity. If knocked down a child, or infirm person could suffer serious injuries.

knit your dog book

The best time to train a dog not to jump up is when it is still young. Once the dog gets older, it can be difficult to beat the habit. If owners have to yell at their dog to get down, it shows they have no real control over training their dog properly.

YOUR DOG

An effective obedience training way of stopping your dog from jumping up is to gently grasp its two front paws. Hold on until it struggles then let it go. Be careful as it may nip your hands in order to get free. With some dogs this training method can show almost immediate results, especially for large dogs.

Another training method when your dog tries to jump on someone is to put their front feet firmly back on the ground. This method is more suitable for small dogs rather than bulky ones. Give a verbal command such as "down"or "sit down". Reward your dog with a morsel of food they like when they sit still without moving. When you are encouraging it to do this, it pays to be at the lowest eye level you can get. Your dog will respond more effectively when it sees you are in closer eye contact level rather than standing over it.

When training your dog consistency is most important. This means educating all the family to use the same repetitive commands and actions. If it does not receive consistent instructions, its training will become haphazard.

There will be times when you as a dog owner will become frustrated when your dog does not do as you ask. Persistent and regular training is necessary to achieve results. Your dog needs to learn to be obedient and do whatever you say. It needs to understand you are the dog owner and to respect you as such. You will soon know who is top dog in your family group as your dog will greet you more enthusiastically than others in your family.

The are basic activities other than training which make your dog happier and more manageable. It needs lots of physical activities including regular exercise. Also, give it a chance to play outside so it can get some fresh air and run around. Not all dogs will chase a ball but if yours does then you can play fetch the ball. Test how excited your dog gets when you say "go for a walk".

Dog Training - How To Become A Dog Whisperer

From the movie directed by Robert Redford, "The Horse Whisperer:" A horse whisperer is a horse trainer who adopts a sympathetic view of the motives, needs and desires of the horse, based on modern equine psychology.

dog backpack

The term goes back to the early 19th century when an Irish horseman, Daniel Sullivan, made a name for himself in England by rehabilitating horses that had become vicious and intractable due to abuse or accidental trauma.

Dog

Since the movie "The Horse Whisperer," the term Dog Whisperer has been developed and used by some dog trainers. The most popular trainer that calls himself the Dog Whisperer is Cesar Milan, but he is not the only trainer who uses that term. Paul Owen, who wrote the book "The Dog Whisperer," calls himself the Original Dog Whisperer and uses a much different approach to dog training than Cesar Milan.

In this article I am going to discuss becoming a dog whisperer by using the explanation described above: A horse whisperer is a horse trainer who adopts a sympathetic view of the motives, needs, and desires of the horse, based on modern equine psychology. A dog whisperer is a dog trainer who adopts a sympathetic view of the motives, needs and desires of the dog, based on modern canine psychology.

Adopt a sympathetic view of your dog's motives. Your dog's motives, needs and desires are simple. Every dog has social needs, the desire to interact and play. Your dog needs to have food and water and your dog needs a sleeping area.

With a clear understanding of your dog's needs and desires, you are able to use them to communicate to your dog and also set up boundaries to help your dog overcome any behavior problems and to live in a domestic situation.

Dogs are extremely social animals. We want to control the social interactions between us and our dogs. Depending on your dog's behavior problems we can use your dog's social needs to deal with any behavior problems.

For instance, some dogs are very demanding and slap their paws at the owner. The owner in turn pays attention and pets their dog. The dog learns that by pawing at the owner, the dog gets the owner's attention. To control social contact we can have the dog perform a quick obedience command. This puts the owner in control.

Playing is also very important to dogs. When you play you need to control the game. Many dogs love to play by their rules. I have seen a large number of dogs that love to steal socks or underwear or any object that they can get.

The dog walks into the room, sees the laundry basket and grabs the socks. The family members see the dog stealing the socks and take off after the dog. The dog loves this and runs around the couch, under the table and behind the chairs. If you look at it from the dog's point of view, the dog is training everyone to play by his rules. The dog is leading, the humans are following. We always want to be the leaders, not the followers.

Have your dog do sit stay for meals. Controlling your dog's food is a great way to communicate to your dog. Controlling the feeding times and by having your dog perform a command like "stay" for her meals is a great way to let your dog know who the leader is.

The stronger you are as the leader, the easier it is for the dog to live with us. Food is a great way to train and motivate your dog. By controlling your dog's food, you can control your dog's behavior. Your dog should always have access to water. Never use water to train your dog.

Your dog needs to understand that you are in charge of sleeping areas. Your dog should understand that you are in charge of the furniture and beds. It is okay to allow your dog up on the furniture--as long as they understand that it is your space and not theirs. Many dogs become very defensive of their sleeping areas.

If you allow your dog on the furniture make sure he understands that it is your. When your dog is young, keep a leash on your dog in the house. When your dog jumps up on the couch, walk over to him and say "Good dog, off." Then pick up the leash and gently pull your dog off the couch. In time your dog will learn the command and get off when you say so.

Those are the basic steps to becoming a dog whisperer. Learning about dog behavior is a lifelong study. After 18 years of training dogs I still attend seminars, workshops, read, view DVDs and work with other trainers.

If you are really serious about becoming a dog trainer a great place to start is the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. It is a great resource for dog trainers and anyone interested in becoming a dog trainer.

Dog Training for Aggressive Dogs

Has your dog been displaying signs of aggression? Aggression in dogs needs to be dealt with right away because even low levels of aggression can escalate with time if they are not dealt with properly.

If your dog is not neutered, make an appointment with your vet right away. Although training is still necessary, neutering a dog can help with hormonal aggression. Not all aggression is hormonal, but it will be much easier to deal with behavioral aggression once hormonal aggression is taken care of.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

Second, evaluate your dog's behavior. What triggers his aggressiveness? Different types of aggression include food aggression, toy aggression, aggression towards other dogs, and aggression towards people. If your dog has one of the latter two, take special care of your dog during walks to make sure he cannot harm people or other dogs.

Next, recognize what warnings you get when your dog is feeling aggressive. These can include growling, pushing or leaning into people, jumping on people, aggressive stances, or ignoring commands. These are signs of low level aggression, which is typically used as a warning by your dog when she feels threatened. They are a dog's way of asserting control over the situation.
Left unchecked, the dog's low level aggressive behavior can escalate to the more dangerous higher level of aggression. Signs of high level aggression include biting, snarling, snapping, jumping up and barking aggressively, staring, and displaying of teeth.

When a dog is exhibiting any of these behaviors, it is vital to start behavior modification immediately. Although most low level of aggression can be dealt with by the owner using dog training techniques such as Nothing In Life Is Free (NILIF), it is often best to seek professional help when your dog starts to display signs of high aggression.

Dog Litter Box Training in 3 Easy Steps

It really is quite simple to litter box train a dog. Most people dread this aspect of being a dog owner. These days it is almost as easy as a litter box for a cat. Before reviewing the 3 steps to successful litter box training for your pooch, there are a few things that you always need to keep in mind when training or disciplining a dog. Always consider the previous training level and habits of your dog. Remember that trainability does range greatly by breed. Some breeds are extremely easy to train while others are some what stubborn and a bit more difficult to train. These dogs may take a little more work but they are trainable.

dog beds

Lets talk about the litter box system itself first. The Ugodog dog litter box is made of sturdy material that can handle a great amount of weight. What sets this system apart from other ones is that its grates are specifically designed to be kind to sensitive doggy paws. The way the grates are made is specific as to not cut the bottom of the paw pads. Also, the openings are small enough so that even the tiniest dogs will not get their paws trapped. The grates also are two separate pieces to allow for easier clean up. This system is eco-friendly, durable, inexpensive and no replacement parts needed! That is why this is my pet potty pick.

Dog

When potty training your pooch, remember that age can be a factor. That said, even older dogs can be trained to use a dog litter box. All you need for this system to be effective is the system itself, some newspaper or paper towels. You can use pee pads underneath the grates but this is expensive and not very environmentally friendly. Newspaper works just as well. Once the dog is trained to use the system, you do not even need newspaper. You can just dump the urine at the end of the day in the toilet and discard any poo that is on top of the grates.

Training tips as easy as 1-2-3:

1) Place the dog litter box in a spot that your dog is used to going on pee pads or if they are use to going outside, place it where you would like.

2) Use a paper towel or newspaper that is soaked with you dogs own urine and place it underneath the grates.

3) When your dog needs to go lead them to the litter box and they will know their own scent and begin to go potty there!

Make sure when you are training your dog that you use repetitive words like, go potty, and positive reinforcement. Some dogs may be shy at first and have accidents. If they do, when you clean up the accident use that urine under the grate and lead your dog over too it after an accident. This should make for an easier life for you and your pooch. No more wet paws or torn up pee pads. Do not forget that furry little friend still needs exercise. So do not eliminate walks.

Bichon Frise Training to Stop Dog Marking

You know that you have managed to achieve successful result in bichon frise training. Then all of a sudden, you discovered dog urine scent in the doorway, table leg and other furniture in the house. How come these things happen when you are well aware that you used effective and appropriate methods in house training? If you see large puddles of urine on the floor, it simply suggests that house training may not be as successful as you want it to be. Perhaps you need more time and determination in order to achieve your desired result. However, if you see smaller amount of urine, the issue is not on unsuccessful or ineffective house training. Your nice friend is simply marking his territory.

Why do dogs urine mark? To a dog's point of view, urine marking is different from wanting to pee. We all know that dogs have incredible sense of smell. This sense of smell is an important part of canine communication. The scent is left to tell other dogs a message, such as whose territory is it, where the marking dog hangs out and his social order. If the marking dog is female, she will also include her mating availability. A dog who's nervous because he is alone at home, has feelings of insecurity or has separation anxiety may also mark to build confidence and reassure himself that everything is alright.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

Dogs that are not neutered or spayed and are not castrated are more likely to mark urine than neutered, spayed or castrated dogs. Male dogs are more likely to mark urine than female dogs however, a female dog may mark too to advertise her mating availability.

Like any other dog problems, there are various ways to stop your dog from marking urine. Puppies should be neutered early to prevent the habit from forming. If you have an older dog, neutering can help reduce or even alleviate the problem, however, you have to do something to break the habit that has been formed.

Neutering is not the only way to stop a dog from marking urine. If an owner doesn't approve of neutering, constant supervision is necessary to break the habit. Instead of allowing your dog to roam around the house freely, make supervision a lot easier by confining him to one area of the house. To catch him in the act, watch for signs like sniffing and circling. Then, the moment he started to left his leg to mark, make a noise loud enough to distract him but not too loud to scare him to death. When he looks around to find out where the noise come from, give him the "no pee" command.

And one more thing... don't forget to praise your dog when he pees in an appropriate place. Bichon frise training will never be successful without praising your bichon.

The Benefits of Dog Kennel Training

Dog kennel training is controversial in some circles. There are some people who believe that putting a dog in a kennel is type of punishment that no dog should have to endure. What many of these people may not realize is that most dogs need a safe a secure place to call there own. So instead of the closet corner, the bottom dresser drawer or a laundry basket full of clean clothes why not give them a place that is specifically theirs. As long as a dog kennel is used properly your dog will suffer little harm.

dog costumes

The first thing to understand is that when dog kennel training is to never use the kennel as a place you put your dog as a punishment if he has done something wrong. It may be tempting to do but you do not want your dog to become afraid of their kennel. It is also important not to leave your dog in a kennel for more then four hours at a time. Dogs, much like humans who work in a cube farm, need to get out in the fresh air, run around and take a potty break. Dogs will also begin to get anxious after about four hours cooped up in a kennel which will have the opposite affect of what you want to accomplish. The key to successfully kennel training your dog is doing it correctly.

Dog

There are many reasons to kennel train a dog. It is important to identify which behavior you are going to be kennel training your dog for. Does he need to be potty trained or is he chewing up things he shouldn't be? Once you the problem is known you can tailor the kennel training to fit your needs.

The idea is to make the kennel as homey as possible for your four legged friend. Make sure there is a warm comfortable pad or blanket to lay on and keep food and most importantly water available. You dogs kennel should be a place that he can go and feel safe and comfortable, this will make the training go much easier.

Let's look at two areas where dog kennel training works well; chewing and house-breaking.

You should keep chew toys available in your dogs kennel and no where else. If you catch him chewing something he shouldn't reprimand him firmly but do not yell at him. Show him his chew toy and put him in his kennel.

House-breaking can take a little more work, but using a kennel is a good way to break your dog of his house messing habits. If he claims his kennel as his refuge he will be like most all other dogs in that he won't go to the bathroom where he sleeps. When he is in his kennel keep an eye on him and when he starts to get restless let him out and take him outside to do his business. Praise him once he is done and repeat this process. He will soon learn that going to the bathroom is an outside activity.

Dog kennel training works well for stubborn or hard to train dogs. If used in the correct way it is a good way to train you dog to be a well behaved family friend.

Treadmill Training - Training Your Dog on the Treadmill

Ever since Cesar Millan mentioned a dog on a treadmill, owners across the country have tried their hand at treadmill training. Some owners have succeeded while others have failed. Like any type of training, treadmill training takes time and patience. It is highly unlikely that your pooch will be a natural, but he can be taught how to use the equipment. A treadmill should not replace a daily exercise routine; though, sometimes, it is a necessary addition.

knit your dog book

Before you toss your pooch on the treadmill, there are safety precautions you should take. Realize that your dog may be frightened by the machine and try to find his way off of it. For this reason, place the treadmill against a wall. If possible, place it in the corner of a room where there is a wall in front (or back) and on one side. Make a barrier around the one of the exposed sides using cardboard. The barrier does not have to be sturdy, but it should stand upright and show your dog that it is not a way out. One side should be left open for your dog to enter and exit the treadmill. Being surrounded on all sides may also add to his fright.

YOUR DOG

Other items that need to be prepared include his leash and his favorite motivator. If your dog normally walks on a harness, then use the harness for training. The same is true for a collar and leash. You should also grab his most loved treat, whether it is food or a favorite toy. Rewarding your dog for good and desired behavior is always necessary when training.

Slowly introduce your pet to the treadmill. If you use the treadmill, then keep him in the room with you when you are using it. He needs to get accustomed to the sight and sound of the machine. Take time placing him on the treadmill, and let him take his time in exploring the equipment. After he has had a chance to check things out (this could take a few minutes or a couple of days), then attach his harness or leash and place him on the treadmill. Never tie the leash off on the treadmill, because a fall could be dangerous. Hold the leash in your hands at all times; you should always have control over your dog. Set the speed to a slow walk. It's a good idea to use a stopwatch to time the training. Since you will be increasing the walking time each day, then it's important to be able to accurately judge the time. Let him walk for a minute or two, and stop the treadmill. Give him a treat for his good work, and then start it again. Once again, let him walk for a couple of minutes, then turn it off for the day. Repeat this process each day, allowing your dog to stay on the treadmill for an extra minute each time. You can slowly increase the speed; but, when increasing the speed, decrease the time so that your pooch can get accustomed to the new movement. Remember that training can take a while, so you may spend a few days just introducing your pet to the machine.

A walk or run on the treadmill should never replace your dog's daily routine. Depending on the breed, some dogs need large amounts of exercise. When an outside walk isn't enough, then a treadmill can be used to expend the extra energy. If it is raining outside or you are unable to go outside for whatever reason, then the treadmill is a good alternative. However, just because the treadmill is a quick fix does not mean that it should be used as the only form of exercise.

Training a dog to walk or run on a treadmill is possible; but, like all training, it does take time. Take your pooch's safety in mind before you start the exercise program. Once your dog is comfortable with the machine, then he is probably ready for his first walk. Start slow, and increase the walking time each day. Once your pup is ready to run, then the time should be decreased, and the process should start again. Before you know it, your pooch will be a treadmill pro!

Basic Dog Obedience Training - How to Teach Your Dog the Most Basic of All Commands

Some new dog owners get a little overwhelmed with their dog behaviors to say the least. Consequently dog obedience training is important way to not only keep your house from attack, but to establish a comfortable and trusting relationship with your dog. This is a way to teach your dog to exhibit certain behavior in every circumstance. In this article i am going to outlines 5 steps that you can use to begin your basic dog obedience training program that will show you how to teach your dog the most basic of all commands. Each step is listed and discussed below so that you can start benefiting straight away.

stop your dog from barking

Here are some basic commands

YOUR DOG

sit: the dog is in a sitting position. down: a dog is typically down when its elbows (front feet) and ear legs are touching the ground or floor. heel: the dog's head or shoulder is parallel to the handler's leg on the left side of the trainer. come or here: (referred to as the recall) "call your dog" equals "come" or "here". stay: the dog must remain in the position (sit, down, stand) and location under which the command was given until it is released by the trainer.

let's list and describe the how-to steps involved when you want to begin your basic dog obedience training program.

step #1: reward obedience

this initial step we use reward to teach our dogs the most basic of all command. This is the simple strategy of rewarding obedience and punishment of disobedience. This simply means that we reward our dogs when something desirable is done and achieved and punishment if a dog does something bad appropriately. This technique has proved to work tremendously.

step #2: using a dog leash

the 2nd step in the process is to use of leash to get your dog to obey your basic command such as sit or stand. Using leash to training your dog to obey basic command and instructions is essential so that you can control your dog in public places for instance. Hence learning how to use a leash to help you in your dog obedience training is very important and it is recommended by every dog trainer i've ever met and worked with.

step #3: use firm voice

the third step is the use of a firm voice. You have to be firm in your voice as you give your command or instruction to your dog during the process of your dog obedience training program. However, you must understand that there is a difference between firm and aggressive voice.

step #4: get the dog's attention

at this step in the process you need to get your dog's attention because if your dog's attention is not on you, it will not be able to respond to your command and instructions. Most of your dog obedience training will be getting his or hers attention and keeping it on yourself. If your dog cannot give you the attention, it will not listen to you, and thus making the training pointless. First, get the dog's attention, most dogs will respond to their name, so call them and when they look at you give the instruction and watch. After doing it few times the dog will associate the command or instruction with looking at you.

step #5: you must be consistent

the final step is that you must be consistent in your training so that you do not confuse your dog. In order to get the respect of your dog you must be consistent and avoid haphazard dog training. The key to keep you consistent is to establish a set of dos and don'ts for your dog.

As you can see when you follow the above steps you will be in a splendid position to achieve more benefits whenever you decide to begin your basic dog obedience training program.

Dog Training Tricks - Cool Dog Tricks To Teach Your Dog

Dogs are smart animals that can learn fun and cool tricks easily when properly trained. Teaching your dog tricks does not only make your dog smarter, it's also a fun thing to do for the owner. Good news is that training a dog is not really that difficult. You can begin with simple dog training tricks before proceeding with advanced dog training. Here's how owners can start with simple training:

dog crate

Giving treats. Dog food is one of the most helpful things that trainers can use for simple dog training because these pets react easily to food. The trainer can begin with giving treats for dog behavior training until the dog becomes more obedient to commands even if there's no more treat.

Dog

Repetition. When teaching dog tricks the trainer has to be patient because pet dogs understand better from repetition. In this way, there is more consistency and the behavior or actions that they have learned become more solid.

Regular training. Like regular exercise for optimum results, dog agility training should be done every day so the pet will not forget the tricks they are taught. Doing this will make the lessons such as the training process, the commands and the dog's obedience stick with them and continue on.

Dog clickers. Using a clicker to teach dog tricks is also very helpful especially because the hearing sense of dogs is very sensitive. They respond to the sound that the clicker makes and it will be easier for them to familiarize the command and the sound so clicker dog training tricksare essential.

Hand motions. Aside from using dog clickers, the trainer can also use hand motions to teach fun dog tricks. When they see physical commands such as rolling over, they can associate the verbal command with the hand movements.

Basic commands. One way of curing dog aggression or unwanted behaviors is to teach them basic commands like sit stay fetch. They serve as the fundamental ways that make toilet training dogs easier to achieve. Moreover, the basic commands also pave the way for advanced dog training for more difficult or impressive tricks.

The Benefits of Teaching Dog Tricks

It is important for trainers to keep in mind that training your dog to do tricks should be safe for the pet and any training technique that may hurt them is not advisable. Training your dog should not be too stressful also which means you don't need to spend the entire day to do the training. Keeping it short will make the pet more focused and willing to get back to it the next day.

Some trainers may want to enroll their pets in group trainings so their dog can socialize with other pets while some prefer individual training. Both methods for teaching dog tricks are highly effective so the owners can choose whichever suits them.

The importance of simple dog training and teaching dogs the basic commands is that it improves their behavior and trains them to avoid doing unpleasant behaviors such as chewing on shoes or carpets or peeing on the wrong places. While training your dog to walk on a leash, you can also teach them proper toilet training. Further, basic training and teaching them to come, sit, stay or stand can promote bonding and play time between owner and pet. Treats can also be used to lure the dog to do the commands and should be given to pets every time they do a trick successfully

Advanced dog training often makes performers out of dogs and people become more impressed or entertained with them because of this. Learning the basics will prepare the dogs to do more complicated tricks such as backing up, catching something, crawling, dancing, playing dead or shaking. Compared to basics commands, training your dogs to do tricks like these also require more persistence from the trainer and the training doesn't need to be every day.

If they teach dog tricks to pets, trainers can develop better communication with dogs and in return, the pets will open up more to trainers. The pet may also gain more confidence from the training and their high energy can be put to good use. Moreover, some people are afraid of dogs and one way to make them feel less threatened around these pets is if they see the dogs performing impressive and fun dog tricks.

Dog training tricks can be quite a lot of work, require a lot of patience and need sufficient time but returns rewarding experiences both for dogs and trainers or owners.

Dog Training Using Toys As Motivation

One question I am asked a lot is, "do I always have to give my dog a treat for doing something?" The short answer is, no, you do not have to give your dog a treat all the time. When I start training a new dog I introduce the behaviors using food rewards. Once the dog is learning the behavior and showing predictibility I start using a toy to motivate the dog to perform the behavior.

dog house

You can start using a toy immediately if your dog is toy motivated. My suggestion is to play tug of war or fetch with your dog and use those games to help strengthen the behavior you are working on.

Dog

For example, get your dog interested in a ball, once they are nice and excited, ask them to sit, when they do, throw the ball as a reward. Of course your dog should know how to play fetch otherwise they will probably get the ball and run off.

Another example is using tug of war as a reward. Prior to using this game as a reward your dog should know what "drop it" means. You will also want to teach a "release" cue. A release cue is a cue that tells the dog it's alright to play.

Whether you play fetch or tug, the steps are the same. When playing fetch you toss the ball where it says, "play a short game of tug."

Using tug of war as a reward goes something like this...

1. Get the dog interested in the toy. When they are motivated give the release cue and then play a short game of tug.

2. Give the "drop it" cue. When they let go give the release cue and play a short game of tug again.

3. Do steps one and two a few times to get your dog understanding the process. When they listen the game starts, when they don't, you just stand there.

4. Once the dog is dropping the toy well and then playing again when released you can add obedience. Start with sit. Give the drop it cue, when they let go say, "good" then encourage them to try and get the toy again, do not give the release cue, have them miss the toy a few times, then when they have all four feet on the ground, raise the toy up a bit and say, "sit" when they do give the release cue and play a game of tug.

In the beginning keep the obedience requests short. Don't ask for to many sits or drop its. You want the dog to enjoy the game. The more you play tug this way the better the dog will get at listening. Their behaviors will speed up and their motivation will be high.

I prefer toys because from my experience dogs are motivated by play far better than by food. After eating so much food they become full and start to lose interest. Playing gives you the advantage of keeping them interested and giving them exercise at the same time. Keep sessions short in the beginning until your dog develops more stamina for the game.

Both of these training examples can be started with puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

Dog Training - 8 Correction Mistakes Dog Owners Make

Just like no dog is perfect, neither are pet owners. A lot of dog behavior problems go right back to poor dog owner training. Here are some of the most common mistakes dog owners make that lead to bad dog behavior:

dog doors

1. Inconsistent training. Just like with your typical human two-year-old, you've must be consistent when training your dog. Letting Max get away with bad behavior even some of the time will lead to problems down the road.

Dog

2. Reinforcing bad behavior. A classic poorly trained dog owner behavior. Even the best of us don't realize when we've done it. Here's the classic example: Buttons scratches the door to be let in. You just painted the door and don't want Buttons ruining the new paint, so you let him in immediately. Guess what Buttons just learned? If he scratches the door, you'll let him in immediately! Don't let your dog outsmart you! You may just have to put up with a few scratch marks on the door until Buttons gets the message. Never let your dog in the house when he scratches on the door or barks.

3. Using the dog's name when correcting him. It's important not to make "no" sound like a part of your puppy's name: Buster No! Just say the word, in a low, growling voice. Don't use "no" when your dog isn't doing the unwanted behavior but is considering it. Try "don't," again, using a low, growling, and firm voice.

4. Leaving the dog alone too much. The pounds are full of young dogs that somebody wanted when they were puppies, but because the owners worked 12-hour days every day, the dog now has behavior problems. Spend time with your dog every day.

5. Crating a dog too long. Not only is this bad for your dog's behavior, keeping him in a crate for hours and hours day after day can affect his growth and his muscle tone.

6. Chaining a dog. If you don't have a secure fence, then keep your dog in the house crated. Chaining a dog is dangerous and cruel.

7. Yelling. Your dog will not respond to yelling. Everyone loses their temper from time to time, but constantly yelling at your dog loses its effect quickly - just like it does on your spouse or your children.

8. Hitting. Swatting your dog with newspaper or hitting him just teaches him that aggression gets the leader of the pack what he wants. Don't hit your dog. It sets a bad example.

Some dogs, especially some toy breeds or hounds, may still have trouble. This is especially true of small dogs. Remember, you are training your pet to not leave waste in his den, and to a small dog your home may be too big to seem den-like.

Stop Dog Chewing - Dog Behavior Training

If you own a dog there's every chance you will encounter dog chewing problems. This article outlines the common reasons why dogs chew, and also how to stop your dog from chewing.

dog kennels

When puppies and dogs chew it is a perfectly natural behavior, just very annoying for us dog owners. Sometimes the chewing can be a dangerous habit for your dog. Things like electric wires, poisons and any number of other objects can cause serious harm to your dog.

Dog

Common Reasons Why Puppies and Dogs Chew
Lonely or boredom. Separation anxiety, often occurs if you work long hours away from home. When they are teething. Through fear or a phobia. Seeking attention. Through anticipation, dogs often chew just before their owner is due to arrive home.

Dogs chew just about anything they can wrap their mouths around. My dogs love chewing socks, shoes, furniture and my whippet actually chewed a large whole in the side of our house!

How To Stop Your Dog From Chewing

Always keep in mind that your dog can't tell the difference between a 0 pair of shoe's and an old rag. And he is not chewing to spite you, dogs don't think like us humans.
The best way to stop your dog from chewing is to actually stop the habit before it forms. This requires you to not leave your dog in a situation where he can chew something that you don't want him to. If your dog chews while you are away from home, keep your dog in his crate or in a kennel run. If you can't or don't like restraining your dog in this manner, just make sure you remove any objects that you don't want chewed. If your dog has a particular liking for something like a furniture leg you could try this method. Coat the object with a foul tasting substance (non toxic) such as bitter apple, cayenne pepper or tabasco sauce. This method often works, but can just transfer the chewing behavior to a different object. If you catch your dog in the act of chewing, give a firm "No!" and replace with a tasty chew toy. Give praise when he starts chewing on the toy. Never ever reprimand your dog if you don't catch him in the act of chewing. If you don't issue your correction within about two seconds of his chewing behavior, he won't have a clue what you are disciplining him for. A good solution for treating any dog behavioral problems is to give them some obedience training. You will gain the trust and respect of your dog by doing this, and it will also provide your dog with some mental stimulation. Give your dog lots of exercise, physical and as mentioned above, mental. Provide your dog with a few of his favorite, tasty dog chews. Don't give him dozens of them as he may then believe he can chew anything. Just give him a couple of good one's, and make it clear to him that if he wants to chew, it must be on his toys.

By applying the above methods, adding a bit of common sense and patience you should be able to quickly stop your dog from chewing. Good luck.

Problems That Can Be Prevented With Jack Russell Training

Achieving successful jack russell training is indeed a pride of every dog owner, more particularly jack russell terrier owners. Seeing these little terriers perform tricks at your command will certainly fill your heart not only with pride but with happiness and self-fulfillment as well. But what if the pet you have been bragging about did something totally embarrassing like peeing at your friend's living room when you went there for a brief visit? Perhaps it'll make you wish that the ground would swallow you, right?

These behaviors, while totally embarrassing, can be prevented with appropriate jack russell training.

SPAYING

Urine marking.

This behavior is not uncommon among dogs. Most dogs, especially those that are not neutered or spayed have tendencies to mark places or things new to them. It's their way of saying, "Back off! This new couch is mine". Additionally, they mark to convey information like the dog's order in the pack or mating availability. Neutering or spaying your beloved pooch can help lessen the marking tendencies. Constant supervision will also prevent your pet from developing such habit. If you see your dog lifting his legs to mark, do something to distract him; clapping your hands or shaking a can or bottle with coins inside. Then give the command "No pee!" or "Stop it!" in a firm tone. During jack russell training to get rid of urine marking, be consistent in using this technique until the problem is totally solved.

Excessive Barking.

Just like urine marking, excessive barking is also one of the most common problems faced by many dog owners. It can be annoying to you and those near you especially if everyone should be sleeping yet your beloved terrier chose to let his voice heard literally. To address the problem, find out what makes your dog bark. Is he afraid to be alone? Or perhaps he is sees squirrels or other animals he thinks he is supposed to chase? To stop the barking, it is important that you provide everything he needs - protection against harsh weather elements, toys to prevent boredom and the likes. Additionally, remove the things that are making him bark - small animals he considered his quarry, boisterous kids running around, etc.

These two behaviors are not the only problems that can be prevented with jack russell training. If your dog problem is neither of the two, be rest assured that there will always be solution to it - and it often involves training.
