Abused Dog Behavior - Training Your Dog to Trust Humans Again

Abused dog behavior is obvious if you have ever seen it. If you have not, here are some signs that your dog may have been abused and some tips on how to try and reestablish your dog's trust in humans again.

A dog that has been abused will be very frightened of you. These dogs often crouch in the corner and cowers.

YOUR DOG

These dogs are afraid of being hurt again and are afraid of people. She simply does not trust humans and if she sees a hand or foot coming at her she assumes it will be to harm her.

If you have one of these dogs you need to start to restore your dog's trust in people again.

Whenever you are around your dog, move slowly and speak in a slow peaceful voice. When you interact with the dog, squat down to her level so that you will seem to be less frightening to her. Try offering treats by hand and maybe even feed her by hand.

When you do obedience training with her, offer lots of praise and patience. Do not raise your voice to correct her, simply redirect her behavior to the correct position.

The only real way to overcome abused dog behavior is to spend a lot of time bonding with the dog. This can be done through feeding, obedience training, grooming, or just watching TV together. Eventually your dog will grow to trust you again but it might take some time, so have lots of patience with them.
