Can Fixed Dogs Mate?

Even if a dog has been neutered, it will take some time to settle down. The testosterone in the body lowers after about three months and a few viable sperms may still be active. So when a neutered dog is near a female in heat, his mating instinct will get aroused.

A widespread misconception about neutered dog is that they do not mate with female dog in heat. The fact is that they still try. Since their testicles have been removed, they are incapable of producing more sperm. So they cannot inseminate and a dog becomes 100% infertile.

SPAYING YOUR DOG

Although a neutered dog will get erection, it poses no threat to female dogs and cannot impregnate it. Sometimes we find a neutered dog humping a spayed dog. The reason behind this could be that it is asserting dominance over the other. Sometimes they do it with human beings just to show affection or happiness. One can solve this problem by commanding them to stop and pushing them off.

A female dog that is fixed cannot go in heat. A dog that is spayed no longer has the hormones required to cause heat. If your dog that was spayed gets a heat cycle, rush her to the vet who performed the surgery - something may be badly wrong.

Many times, dogs behave as they do when they are in season. They also get grumpy however this can be dismissed as a matter of tendency or habit.

The chances of a spayed dog going into heat are extremely rare. Ovaries are found in the sac. In older and overweight animals, the sac is packed with fat. Sometimes ovaries could be ectopic i.e. they are not found where they need to be, this is termed as congenital. If the ovarian tissue was not well developed during spaying, then it is possible that small bits of these tissues remained within the body following the surgery. This tissue can grow and respond to signals given by the brain to produce hormones and cause heat cycles.

There could be bleeding, even if the uterus and ovaries have been removed. The explanation is that the lining of the vagina can bleed and swell when it responds to hormones, and this stimulates a heat cycle. However, the dog will not get pregnant, as the uterus was removed.

Such cases are rare but not impossible. So in brief, fixed dogs can mate - but cannot breed.
