Brucellosis Infections in Dogs

Burcella canis is a bacteria that is one of the major causes of sterility and abortion in dogs.

One of the major symptoms that your dog kennel might have this disease is repeated abortions two weeks prior to term or whenever the dog delivers stillborn puppies or puppies that are very sick and die. Puppies can even become infected in utero and aborted up to 50 days after conception.

While most adult dogs do not have visible symptoms, sometimes in acute cases a dog could have swollen lymph nodes and a fever. But for the most part, there are no clinical signs.

The most common way that does that Brucellosis is transmitted is through breeding. Its passes between male and female dogs while they are breeding. So you can see how if there is just one stud dog infected, the whole kennel could quickly become infected as well. Male dogs often get this bacteria in their testicles, which can result in sterility

Treatment for this disease is very difficult and often requires a long course of antibiotics. For most dogs it is recommended that they do not be bred anymore, so this often leads to spaying and neutering.

To prevent this disease from entering your kennel you should always test any animals before they enter your breeding program.

Remember that this disease is often very silent in adult dogs and the only way that you'll probably suspect that your dogs might be infected is that their reproductive capacities are greatly reduced.
