When to Spay Dogs

There is a myth that you will have a healthier dog in later life if you allow the dog to have at least one season or litter of pups.

There is no real evidence to back up this claim and many Vets are now recommending that you get your dog neutered or spayed as soon as possible. Dogs will come in to season every six months or so and this will usually last for at least two weeks. At this time your female will be highly receptive and if she encounters a male dog there is a very high chance that she will conceive.

Trying to keep your female dog away from other dogs for two weeks will be a mighty challenge. You will have males trying to get to her and she will do anything to escape the household. This is reason enough to get your dog spayed.

What would you do if your female dog had a litter of twelve puppies? This could easily happen and the cost involved is enormous. If you cannot home these puppy after the eight week period in which they need to stay with their mother you will have a very hefty responsibility on your hands. With a lifetime of extra Vet bills and mouths to feed.

There is a myth that spayed or neutered dogs will get fat. Not so. If you give her regular exercise and feed her a proper diet then this simply will not happen.

Talk to your Vet and get your dog spayed as soon as you are told your dog is the right age.

This really will save you countless problems in the future and will decrease the unfortunate number of animals that are ending up in rescue centres around the world.
