Your Choice Of Dog House Styles

It may come as a surprise, but in recent years dog houses have become a lot more than just a place your pets can sleep. In fact, there are now hundreds of interesting, attractive dog kennel plans out there to be downloaded online.

There are a few different options to pick from:

1) A traditional dog house with an angular roof. This kind of dog house allows rainwater to run straight off onto the ground. It keeps your pet dry, and includes overhanging roofing. Generally you'll want to elevate this kind of dog house about 2 inches from the ground to allow air circulation.

2) A simple, flat roofed dog kennel. This gives you some extra "table space" on top of the actual dog house. Your pet might like to lay up there in the sun, or perhaps you'll want to keep a little herb garden up there. Whatever your choice, it can be built in a way that looks exceptionally attractive.

3) The large, duplex styled dog houses. These are great if you're feeling adventurous. If you've got more than 1 dog, and they don't mind sleeping in close proximity to each other, you're on to a winner. A duplex DIY dog kennel will only cost you a bit extra, and you can even include a removable wall to separate your animals if they have problems with each other.

Of course, there are many more than just these 3. Kennels can be made from wood, brick, metal, or even stone if you've got access to the appropriate materials.

Extra Pre-Construction Tips

- Slope the floor toward the entrance to allow any water your dog may bring inside to run out.

- Make use of overhanging roofing to allow rain to run off, and NOT inside the kennel.

- Make customizations to the base dog house plan. Leash rings, naming plaques, paint, etc..

- Consider building from a higher grade wood. Pine is alright, but cedar is absolutely stunning.
