The Wooden Dog House

The wooden dog house is by far the most popular choice for DIY enthusiasts. Lumber is easy to obtain, it's relatively cheap, and it's very simple to work with. You can ask your local lumber yard which species of timber is best for dog kennels, but you'll generally find that treated pine is the best in terms of all-round value.

If you've got a few extra dimes in your pocket, you can go for high grade woods like cedar. They don't chemically treat cedar, as it already contains a natural enzyme that makes it water and rot resistant. Great if you don't particularly like chemicals.

The Brick Dog House

Brick is another great material for dog kennel construction. It looks great, and is extremely solid. The only problem is that it's very heavy. This means that you can't easily move the kennel around, so it really becomes part of your property. It also tend to get quite cold in winter.

The Sheet Metal Dog House

The cheapest material to build your dog kennel from is sheet metal. You generally can't build an entire kennel from it, but it can significantly reduce the cost of building from wood. It also acts as a great way to keep the internal climate cool. It's best attached to the walls and roof.
